Hey everybody, I havent posted anything on here in a long time, but now I have somethin to be happy about. This happened the other day and it wasnt with my metal detector. The story goes as this...
The neighbors of these people i know own storage garages and when the customers dont pay their bills, the owners have to clear out the storage garage and pretty much throw the peoples stuff out unless they can come get it. Well this stuff was sitting out there for quite some time, so just the other day the owners told my friends that we could take whatever we want from the pile. It wasnt like a run right over there type thing, I did feel sorry for the people who owned the stuff, but it was about to be trash. I had no clue what to expect to find, and thinkin there would be coins was far from my mind. So I went over and started to look at some stuff. Well there was this Brinks Home security lock box in a pile of stuff, so i took it ,because of course, lock boxes have important stuff in them. Well i got excited and just ripped open the lock box with my hands! What i found inside was like heaven to me. First, there was a bag of foreign coins and paper money, then under that i saw another bag with coin cases in them, so I knew there was something good. What I ended up finding were 53 wheat pennies, 3 buffalo nickels dated 1935, 1936, and unknown, 3 older jefferson nickels, one being a war nickel...a 1944 mercury dime, a 1943 steel penny, and two Indian head pennies dated 1881 and 1891. Plus just a couple other coins. I was so umped and still am, lol. But I have come to the conclusion that if those people do ask about the coins, I will gladly give therm back. Sorry I dont have pictures, I will ASAP

I will say it again now that I saw the pics...........great score.........on a 100% legal, no guilt find.........no matter what some say.

not sure why there always has to be at least one person who just cannot be happy for you. It is sad that people try to bring you down, life is too short for that. It is not like you found several hundred rare silver coins. No reason to feel bad, just smile that u found it, consider it a blessing.

That is a neat find. You sure was lucky. Around here if you don't pay your bill they hold a auction and sell your stuff for the payment.......

Just eyeballing them, I can tell there is no silver, except for the possible exception.
Of course, I may be wrong, I dount it.
I've been eyeballing foreign coins for years.

Looks like you got at least 4 or 5 aluminum, you can eliminate them.
Nickels you can eliminate, and anything that is bright, chrome shiny looking.

That should leave you with just a few possibilities, and you should be able to look them up individually on the net for metal content.

I guess that doesn't mean that you should feel guilty but still, you shouldn't celebrate other peoples misfortunes.
I agree with you from a morale standpoint and feel bad for anyone losing anything of value. But on the other hand, isn't that really what this hobby is about? I mean that gold or silver ring you find and post here probably wasn't left or planted in the ground by a person with a smile on their face hoping you would find it. This holds true for almost everything of value found by us. The success of our hobby depends on others misfortune. Again, I don't celebrate others misfortune, but we all know people lose things and we all enjoy the search and recovery of these things. Nice finds Bobby! JJ

Great finds for sure!!! I wouldn't give the stuff back, it was in the trash pile and IT WAS GOING TO GO TO THE DUMP and lost forever. When I am treasure hunting I keep everything that I find regardless if I can track down the owner or not. I found it and its mine end of story. The only exception would be if I was MD'ng and somebody came up to me and asked for help and they gave a clear & exact description of the lost item and the general area where it was lost, then and only then would I ever give something back.

Some people like to return lost rings and such and I am happy for them when they can, me though, I am not interested in parting with my treasures. We take the time to find the stuff (weather it be MD'ng, trash pickin, yardsale hunting ect, its ours to do with as we choose.

xray, I commend you for your good intentions and integrity. You are an upstanding person, no doubt. I think imagination may have taken flight, just a little, in this post. I honestly don't believe there is a little jimmy crying at the kitchen table because his mother couldn't make ends meet to save his coin collection. I'm not vouching for "the system", but the steps are obvious to anyone as to what happens to your property if you don't pay or abandon it. This is not a large object that would have been difficult to move or relocate. The fact is: if anything in the storage unit was remotely important to anyone storing something there, they would have had more than enough time and notice to remove it before the "system" and the evil Bobby S could have their way with it. I don't think contacting the owners would have resulted in the front page, teary eyed, grateful reunion you are envisioning. I picture a quick "Thanks", followed by "Why didn't you bring the rest of my stuff?" Bobby was just the final stop before the land fill. He did note that he would return it upon request. Again xray, you are a fine person! But I'm sure you are finding it may not be in your best interests to condemn others for not demonstrating the level of honesty, integrity and tenacity you abide by. To each their own. Again, Nice find Bobby! JJ

Thanks again guys, but Xray does deserve some credit....My original post didnt have in it that I would return the stuff. I mean I didnt say I wouldnt return it if they wanted it back, I just figured as the duty of any treasure hobbyist, it would just be assumed that I would do the right thing if necessary. So xrays first post was before I changed it around and he just must of got out of it that I wouldnt of wanted to give the stuff back. Its not his fault, I guess its mine for not initially making my post clear from the beginning.

WOW!!! Did this thread take off in an unwanted way I think...I say keep the darn box...the original owner was probably some old person who croaked and their kin probably knew nothing of the stuff in the storage container, or if they did, they were not about to spend THEIR hard earned money on a dead relatives stuff, so again...it is forfeited...If the call was made, this is how it would probably go..."Oh yes...I do own that box, and would like t back...(YEAH RIGHT!!!...They never knew about it), but greed is gonna kick in, and NOW they want it...So the point I am making, is you may see it one way or another, and in the end, who is to say what is really right...Even if you think it is right, the person who would receive the box is probably saying "Stupid fool just handed it over to me...I never even knew about this until he called, now I have a neat coin collection!!! SUCKA!!!
So IMHO...you must just do what you think is right, and hope for the best...Personally, I would keep the box and do as the OP would do...IF they ever come looking for the box, I would give it back...

BTW...I am not religious...I AM a REALIST

Just to add some comic relief to this, even if it isnt found funny....Arent lock boxes suppose to be hard to break into? I was able to pull it open with my hands! Either i got hidden strength or security boxes arent really that secure.
