If this is the PI version of the XL500 (I think they also made a VLF XL500) then a large coil is pretty easy. 24awg PVC wire will probably work, just try to get the inductance close. Shielding is the hard part, but for this app it may work without shielding.

It is the pi version. I have no knowledge of how to make a coil for a metal detector. Could somebody point me in the right direction some links they know of.

What a great idea! I kayak all the time looking for rocks and taking wildlife photos. Never thought of pulling a detector coil. One river we paddle often is a tourist destination and have found gold rings on the bottom before looking for stones. Think I will try this!
