Hello all I was digging today at an old house tear down I found this under where garage sat it was deep I have no idea what it is. ? It is heavy like a coin ( Bart suggested it was called a hemming. Something used to hold down a ladies skirt in the wind. ? )

Yep......dress hem weight. (coat...etc)
 

I believe they were also sewn into curtains. Many have a number on them indicating size and I see yours has a number 4 which I think is a bigger one--may have been for a curtain. Typically they are called "hem weights." Probably dates to late 1800s or so.
 

Yeap hem or curtain weight as mentioned.
 

Hem weight, just found one the other day myself.
 

nothing wrong with a hem weight, usually for me that means im on an old spot!
