The signal you will get , if it is upright, is the signal of the lid. If it is an old zinc (gray metal lid with white glass liner) You will get a zinc signal. If it is the brass plated iron lid, you will probably get an iron signal. A good reason to dig all signals. It won't signal silver, if that is what you are thinking, UNLESS the jar is on it's side. I will give you a clue from experience, If it has gold coins also, it will still signal the lid if upright. Frank...

Silver coins at one foot depth should be a screamer. If you have a halfway decent metal detector it should detect the silver. Normally PM will give you a softer tone than steel, iron aluminium ect. We have a test garden in our backyard and 3.5 lbs of silver at 14 inches is a really hard hit on our White Sierra Madre. When you raise the coil you still get a signal its just stronger as you lower it closer to the ground.
