I dug this up yesterday. I thought it was a buckle at first but now I realize its a cartridge box plate. Is it unusual to find one in n.h.? I guess you can date these by the pattern but from the sites I've looked at, I can't see any difference. Any help would be great!

Nice plate!!

Can you give it's measurements, which will help in determining which belt plate it is?

But I must ask, why is it so shiny?

It looks like you polished it and that unfortunately will decease to value, IMHO, most collectors want to see the original patina.

Its 3.5 by 2.25. I didn't polish, just washed the dirt off. That's one reason I thought it was gold instead of brass. I've found IH and other coins before so I know you shouldn't clean them. By looking at the back, it's a cartridge plate. The belt plates have 3 puppy paw connections.

I would bet that it's a recent loss. Maybe a re-enactor's piece?

I don't think that someone would go to the trouble to bury it where I found it. If you look at my other post it was at the top corner of the cellar hole , 12 inches down under bricks, ash, dirt and tree limbs which I cleared. I think the ash protected the brass somehow, like a screen protector. It was ash colored, that's essentially what I washed off. The cellar hole is also quite remote.

Man, I don't think so. The back tells the tale. Original all the way.
