I was walking in to a site that I dug a yankee staff officers coat button at, for a short hunt about 150 yds from the foundation i turn on my gear and start walking the roadbed about 10 feet in BAm signal. Dig it out and low and behold a navy button! It was the only period find except for about 5 mule shoes. Now I am more curious why these 2 different buttons would show up here many miles from CW acion? With the aount of iron around this site its leading me to beleive that it may have been a blacksmiths shop? Maybe they were there getting there mounts reshoed???? It has good gilt in the background and probably the best condition button ive dug from my red dirt here!

Nice find. If you want to clean the back up some more use aluminum jelly on the back it will take the gunk off and leave the patina. Works great on buttons. Use a toothpick then rinse off and repeat if necessary. Here is a before and after picture on how well it cleaned up a button I found. Again congrats on a great button.

Super find on a super fine!

I agree with Treasure Hound, that is a candidate for Aluminum Jelly. I see gilt under the grunge. Look what Naval jelly did for my Navy button recently listed as 6 Feb Finds. Posted an after cleaning picture near the end of the thread.

It is interesting the different buttons that pop up at home sites. Did the Confederates occupy that home and then the union or vice versus. It makes the imagination run wild. Great find.

Maybe a member of the household was in the war and collected or picked up the buttons somewhere else.
I have found three union Eagle buttons at an old home site here in south Georgia that is nowhere near a battle ground. The closest place would have been Andersonville prison about 35 miles away. I am guessing a guard from the prison collected them and they were lost at a later date.

Fantastic find! I have not found any buttons yet, but its on my rather long list ;D

Also, whats Aluminum jelly? Please help a newbie out.
I have heard of Naval jelly for removing rust on iron and steel, but not aluminum jelly.

Aluminium Jelly is a cleaning agaent that will bring out the gilting of the button while not damaging the patina
