Dug a nice boot pistol today (New photos of cleaned pistol added 11/29/11)

My son Jeremy, our friend Doug, and I were hunting an old house site today and dug a nice little boot pistol. Not sure what it is yet as we haven't cleaned it.

Cleaning this little pistol has been a very slow process. It is close to being finished, so I will post some updated photos tomorrow.
As with many other relics found at this site, it appears as though this pistol has suffered extreme heat - fire damage.
It is pretty rough, and no markings are visible.

I was afraid of that.But hey you done what you could it looks nice. Iron for me is a nono just nothing ever left to work with here on the coast.

Very cool for a 100+ year old pistol...You mentioned the pieces looked like they had been in a fire...Do you know if there was a house on the site that caught fire back in the 1800s?

It is an old house site dating back to the late 1700's, but how it met its demise, I don't know. There is some indication that it may have burned though, as there are bits and pieces of charcoal that turn up in the screen, and some of the relics we find have that distinctive burnt look about them. As the excavation progresses, we hope to learn more about the site. Still a LOT of dirt and rocks to be moved.

I got mixed feelings about the cleaning. Did some electrolysis experiments myself.

Man you guys a re sure putting in an effort on that site. Don't think I got what it takes for that.

Go back and walk that line, detecting all the way ....might be pointer to cache

That was a cute little jaw bone .. it was deep, too! Found a couple other bones and bone fragments as well. Will definitely hit that spot again, and again, and again. Come join us sometime.. got a trash pit to find!
