Early 1800's Eagle Artillery Button "Updated Pics"

My last hole at 7PM tonight yielded this early Artillery Button. Me, Bri, and Roz had basically found nothing until I found this. This is my second of this type. Would like an ID of this button. It has some great detail. The dark spots are crud and dirt. Seems to be coming off with a Q tip soaked in warm water and gently rubbing. Says "Extra Strong" on the back with a leaf and flower design. Has a complete shank that won't allow me to scan to show the back. I will post better pics when all of the crud is off the front. Can someone give an ID and age? Thanks Hogge

That just goes to show you that no one should give up until the machine goes off. Great find for your last hole, Hogge! :headbang: It doesn't get much better than that!

Hogge,
It's hard to tell in your picture, but you may have this one I see in Albert's button book - AY52a.
The back mark says "extra strong". Does yours measure 22mm?
Nice find,
MM

Re: Early 1800's Eagle Artillery Button

After looking at these pics...It's DEFINITELY AY52-B for the front. Your pencil is covering the description. I am hoping this one also says Extra Strong for the back. The cannon balls are spread out a little, and the hitch is curved with holes in it. I will post better pics when I am done cleaning it. Awesome detail in it. It's gonna be the nicest I've dug. Thanks MM and Leddel for your guys help! :icon_thumright: :icon_thumleft: The Hogge

Great find! I found one of the varieties of these, but could only make out the wheel on mine. Glad to see a nice one come out!

Hogge,
The AY52b in Albert's book shows a 23mm "Lewis & Tomes / Extra RICH" back mark.
Either ways it's one heck of a great button. :icon_thumleft:
Here is a picture of the one I dug before.

SORRY guys....At this point, and before it's perfectly cleaned, I'm not going to say definitively ,what example this is. There are suttle differences in each example, (52A-B), that I am looking at. Let me clean it to it's best, and I'll post the finished product, then let everyone see. I have to be honest, and quite frankly, it's not maching totally with either example. Although close to each one, there are clear differences in both, that are NOT matching up. Especially the "Extra Strong" example of AY52-A. It's definitely NOT that front. :dontknow: I'll leave it at that for now, and I will post the finished button in a couple days. THANKS Hogge
