Early 1800's Eagle Artillery Button "Updated Pics"

My last hole at 7PM tonight yielded this early Artillery Button. Me, Bri, and Roz had basically found nothing until I found this. This is my second of this type. Would like an ID of this button. It has some great detail. The dark spots are crud and dirt. Seems to be coming off with a Q tip soaked in warm water and gently rubbing. Says "Extra Strong" on the back with a leaf and flower design. Has a complete shank that won't allow me to scan to show the back. I will post better pics when all of the crud is off the front. Can someone give an ID and age? Thanks Hogge

Re: Early 1800's Eagle Artillery Button

OK Guys, Here's the updated pics. Both buttons are identical and found approximately 5 miles apart at different sites. They both say "EXTRA STRONG" with a vine, leafy, pattern on the back. Looking closely, you can plainly see the front matches the AY52-B in Alberts. The problem with this is, the backmark for this one is NOT "EXTRA STRONG", but is, according to Alberts, "EXTRA RICH". I heard there are more varieties in "TICE'S Button Book". This is the one I'm going to purchase. Does anyone have Tice's book, and can possibly scan the page for my variety? This is driving me NUTS! :help: :tongue3: :laughing9: The only problem I see with the ones I have, and the AY52-B from Alberts, is the spacing of the cannon balls seems to be slightly wider in Alberts pic, than the ones I have. :dontknow: :icon_scratch:

Re: Early 1800's Eagle Artillery Button "Updated Pics"

Hogge,
I did my best and looked through three different button books. Some info & pictures attached. I'm still going with AY52a (22mm)in Albert's book, since it has your matching back mark.
AY52b (23mm) says "similar device" so it is close, but that's not your back mark.
***Does yours measure 22mm or 23mm? ???

I've found tons of back marks listed with "Extra Rich" and even "Super strong". The only "Extra Strong" I see noted is referenced to a Thomas Potts back during that time.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. :dontknow:
