I can't imagine finding a coin like that....my finds are all small denominations....too bad I was surfing back in those days at Sebastian every weekend....I never paid much attention to those dark hunks of metal that littered the beach when there was storm surf.... that was back in the late 1960's.....back then there were only rocks at the inlet with a painted line down the rocks on north side...surfers on one side, fishermen on the other..I kid you not...... lol

An interesting little Lima cob. Double struck, but might be worthy of an offer since it is fairly reasonable now. Notice the Lima star....

If this coin proves legit it would be a very good deal I think. No paper, but possibly Atocha. Look at cross side turned 180 to see transposed lions and castles....

Man, he has done a good job of convincing me that that is an authentic replica. I think I'm going to go slab some Monopoly money.

Seller that that this group "discovered" as assigning a shipwreck cert to non-salvage coin a few months back. Look at this coin and then compare it to the outline on the cert. Yup, don't match....

Nope, that is an "M" assayer from Potosi. I wonder what this cert says? Too small....

Stan...you really have me stumped on this one...I doubt it is 1645...yet alone an overdate...that is really pushing the envelope. The coin definitely is 1644 -1647 and Potosi, Juan Ximinez de Tapia. Judging from the wear in that area...I think it is a "7". I certainly wouldn't pay the premium for the dealers' presumptuous claims. All-in-all that is a very interesting coin and I would love to own it.

I have looked at that coin several times....in no way that is an overdate or double date (overdates in our coins are nothing like these..these are generally quite crude and take up a lot of room)....There just isn't enough room in that blank space. I can see a very vague outline of a numeral....sometimes I think it could be a "2" or an "8". I definitely see the line from right top to left bottom. Knowing the possible dates, which are 1644 - 1647, I would say it has got to be 1647. That "4" is just so odd....really out of proportion.

These old ones are so unique...a numismatist should truly love these coins...you learn something new with every cob you encounter!

Sometimes I think we should be slabbing these coins, rendering our opinions.....lol. I think we do a more thorough investigation than any of the professionals.
