Stan...you really have me stumped on this one...I doubt it is 1645...yet alone an overdate...that is really pushing the envelope. The coin definitely is 1644 -1647 and Potosi, Juan Ximinez de Tapia. Judging from the wear in that area...I think it is a "7". I certainly wouldn't pay the premium for the dealers' presumptuous claims. All-in-all that is a very interesting coin and I would love to own it.

I have looked at that coin several times....in no way that is an overdate or double date (overdates in our coins are nothing like these..these are generally quite crude and take up a lot of room)....There just isn't enough room in that blank space. I can see a very vague outline of a numeral....sometimes I think it could be a "2" or an "8". I definitely see the line from right top to left bottom. Knowing the possible dates, which are 1644 - 1647, I would say it has got to be 1647. That "4" is just so odd....really out of proportion.

This is an excellent coin for further speculation and study. When I say study I mean comparing meticulously with coins from multiple sources (both books and auction catalogs). The proportion of the "4" doesn't bother me. If you have Menzell's book look at the 1646 presentation piece on page 283. The last "6" is about a half the size of the "4". I'll do some more study before the auction ends in four days and we can try to solve the riddle and guestimate the value. I need to find the double struck example he is talking about....Stan

Stan, I recall a story like this in the Vero area when some beach property was being developed, but I have not heard of this one. Do you or anyone know about this find in the town of Sebastian? I really don't want to comment about the coins....they are interesting. If the story had said they were found in the vicinity of one of the area Indian mounds it would be more believable, but Walmart? I truly doubt that Walmart would build on a mound site. Wow..... Wayne

John Durham has been out there for years .. Born in Ft.Pierce.. came to fame in late 1990's , finding a cache of Seminole trade beads , from the Billy Bowleggs raiding days ..
They were selling them by the Gallon (or Quart)..

I saw him about 6 or 7 years ago at an artifact show.. he was getting quite old then..

Had an assortment of coins, artifacts and other stuff.. with alot of good stories to go with them

Not sure if he is alive not or not ..

Don, I thought that too, but the cert picture has the coin propped so you are looking down on it at about a 45 degree angle.

Cert has date in blank as "1721"
Box checked for Philip V and reign
Box checked for 2 reale denomination
Dated and signed by Joseph ? (Harrison, Hanson, Henderson?) "Authenticating Numismatist"

wonderful early mexico 8 .. most likely 1575/1580's, alot of 4reales were made .. not too many 8 reales... with perfect die alignment..

these were considered the 1st 8 reales of the new world , until 3 Rincon 8's were found in the Padre Isl fleet..

I've read about this variety before. It looks roller pressed to me. There is one author who says all the gold cobs at the Mexico mint were roller pressed after a certain date. I don't know how much I believe that, but this one really has an uneven die elongation across its face.

Production recorded at 1,587,481 eight reale pieces. About 50% higher than in 1713.

Very doubtful this is from the Consolacion. Coin is from 26 years before the sinking, does not match the patina color and corrosion levels typical of this wreck, has a cert that is not from the authorized salvors, and the seller has been proven (in this forum) to switch certs and misrepresent coins in the past. Just my unsolicited opinion... :)
