No dimes or nickels for me at my drop off.

I did manage an interesting find at a auction today. Most items went for way too much like a circulated 1976 Ike going for $15 or 2005 $5 gold coin going for $325.

So what did I find?

Lets just say, I was chomping at the bit when I saw it.

I will get it tested tomorrow and then pull and weigh it if its real. If not, I might try to resell it or keep it as a novelty item, I am unsure but I am pretty sure its gold. I paid $27.50

Hey EE, I tried my hand at auctions myself the other day. I figured people were going to overpay but I gave it a shot anyway. When common date circulated peace dollars started selling for $50 each I thought "Yea, I wasted gas to come here". The real stinger was when people were paying $8 each for 40% halves. I kept shaking my head in disbelief and was hoping I would see other people with looks like "WTF?" but alas, I seemed to be the only sane person there. I stuck it out for the gold coins thinking the higher prices would scare people but the moment a $20 gold piece went for over $1900, I let out a laugh, shook my head, and left. Oh well, I tried!

2 auctions ago at the same place, $5 gold pieces went for $135 ea. It all depends on who shows up. Sometimes things are over sold over priced and sometimes you get things for a steal. If they are buying 40% halves at $8 ea then its time to put some of yours up for auction. You could make money by buying peace dollars at the coin store and putting them up at the auction.

Got the tooth tested, its 18k. Sadly though, its under .4 grams in weight, I will call it at .3 grams since its nearly cleaned out.. I have not got it fully cleaned out but I will tell you what, its biting me in the arse. I will lose at least $12 on it. Not nearly as much gold as I had figured it would have and so I will be paying for some learning experience.

I picked up 4 junk quarters from the coin shop while I was there. Co worker gave me $20 last month for gas to put into some free silver.

Damn I hope my 2 boxes on Wednesday pay out.

Fridays auction might be promising, coins and Jewelry.

Saturdays auction looks super promising, as long as Truman the Amish isnt there. I have not decided for sure if I will go on Saturday but it looks like I will have nothing better to do with it being below 40 degrees after a snow.

Well, coin counter fixed, got caught up on my dumping. One dump bank shorted me between $35-$60 after a bag change, not sure what will happen with that, will find out middle of next week when I go to dump again.

Got the call from the bank, they deposited $73 into my account for the miscount. First good news I have had in a while.

2 boxes due tomorrow...

Well, seems my luck might be changing, things have went from horrible to normal over night in the CRH world. My new Skunk Streak record has stopped at 16 boxes.

In the auction world, it was 'filled with gold'.

Dumped some coin and picked up some loose CWR's\

3 rolls of halves - Skunked

After work picked up my boxes etc

2 rolls of CWR Nickels, I have not searched yet, still sitting in the car
1 roll of CWR dimes - Skunked
6 Rolls of CWR quarters - Skunked

Box 1: Skunked
Box 2: 5/40% (0.7395)
Box 3: Skunked
Box 4: 2/40% - 1/90% (0.6575)
Box 5: 7/40% (1.0353)

Now that is how my boxes should be coming along, this is more along my averages for the first half of last year though a little high. I found two 40% halves in one roll and at one point had 4 halves within 5 rolls of each other. Hope to have this luck continue into next weeks boxes and longer.

As for the auction Last night, there was not much there but I did get some keepers.

Two 1/10th 10k gold filled pins for $1. Waitress Union and VFA.
One 1/20th 10k gold filled pin, NRA for $1
10th 12k Gold filled Glasses for $1

Dump today and possibly pick up some dimes and nickels. Not sure on auction today yet, snow storm supposed to roll through, going to decide in the next few hours.

Ok.. Auction to the north today was a mega score. I am still dizzy from the awesomeness that transpired. I am going to eat some food since I have not ate anything since breakfast, get some pictures and weights and figure it all out.

OK.. Went to the auction to see what I could see. I look at some of the items, weigh some of them etc.. start looking in boxes of costume jewelry and see Vlad the Ukranian there. We get to talking and the sterling items at the auction are his that he put up to resell except the coins, and the two final items.

Auction starts off sort of slow but they get to the first item, a set of 2 small and one large sterling thistle vases. I have set my limits for this item $55. I win the bid easily for $30.

IMAG0051.jpg

After lots of waiting and lots of jumping around ( they dont do one sellers lot at a time but jump back and forth all over the auction house ) they get to some of the costume jewelery. They start out and the bidding hits $20.. people pick their fill, then $15, they pick their fill, Than $10, than $7.50... I am waiting for $5. She says she wont go below $7.50, which sucks, I was waiting to clean up the lot for the cheap so I grab a set of sterling earrings and a sterling watch and band. The watch turns out to be a Aria with mother of pearl face and semi precious stones on the band from the 80's. I see them online for $150ish

IMAG0047.jpg

After a bit they start selling coins. I end up getting 3 from the lot. Republic of Panama ($25), Presidential Journey for Peace ($22.50) and Postmaster of America commemorative ($20), all solid Sterling.

IMAG0042.jpg IMAG0044.jpg IMAG0045.jpg

Next up for me was some Sterling Shakers. I put a limit of $96 on them, I ended up getting them for $50.00

IMAG0048.jpg

Next after that, nearing the end of the auction, they lump two items together, a small thin sterling vase and a sterling cup, My limit on the pair was $109 I get the pair for $45.

IMAG0049.jpg IMAG0052.jpg

Then comes this bowl, not marked at all with anything but this on the outside. I took a chance with its markings of 1944 and the smell of silver on my hands from it and didnt find out until I got home that it was sterling. On the bottom there is a screw in part with ribbons with glass hiding the markings, so everyone thought it was plated, I figured I would gamble and for once I won.

USS LST 577

Looking online and doing a little research, it seems the USS LST 577 was torpedoed and lost on Feb 11th 1945.

IMAG0053.jpg 57_big.jpg

And the final item of the day was two candle sticks I set a limit of $10 on and when she took my bid, she said I bid $15. I didnt fight it since I knew already I had done good ( didnt know yet about the bowl ).

IMAG0050.jpg

The long stem vase and the two candle sticks with be cleaned sometime during the week to find their true weights so they will be added to the March totals later. Monday I have halves to dump and possibly dimes and nickels to pick up. Tomorrow might be another auction depending on how bad the snow is. Vlad wants to hit a auction near KC and invited me to go, hopefully he doesnt want to dump me in the Missouri river, he lost money today on the sterling I bought.

Very nice EE, I'm not very educated on the Silver value of items myself ( more so in coins) but it seems you are, and you got everything well under what you were setting your limits at, so I'd say you did really great! Glad you finally scored some nice finds!

Nice boxes of halves you had there too! I know you were happy opening those rolls. HH, Maverick.
