After doing my peltor mod the other day I decided to run some tests by waving various objects in front of the coil. I usually run my volume around 50%, but for whatever reason I had it set at max. Not only did the tones sound clearer but when I passed a bottle cap under the coil, it made its usual beep but then switched to that buzzing sound I believe is referred to as nulling. Is that normal when using higher volumes?

Nulling is when the coil passes over iron and you lose all sound for a couple seconds, there is no sound on a null... I always run my volume wide open, I adjust the threshold till it is a faint buzzing....

That buzzing sound you heard might be because you need batteries charged. If it only happens whey your at full volume, back it off a might and see if you still get the buzzing. As Treasure Hunter said, the null is absent of sound then the threshold comes back either higer or lower depending on what it disc out.
