Hi all,

If you can believe this, it was 74 degrees in Missouri today (a record) so I wanted to get out and try hunting an older area. My wife recently told me about a friend and co-worker who lives in a house that was built in 1869, and I was very interested in seeing what history may lie beneath the ground in the yard surrounding it. I received permission to search the property and arrived there at about 10:15 a.m.

I started my search, and within 5 minutes I found 2 Lincoln Memorial cents and a 1943 Merc dime. I had visions of silver coins everywhere after finding the Merc, but for some reason it was the only silver coin dug after hours of careful searching. I continued to pound the yard as carefully and deliberately as I could, and my efforts paid off with my first Indian Head, an 1887. It was about 5 inches deep and was unrecognizeable at first. I saw the greenish color and knew it wasn't a modern Lincoln or a wheat (although it rang up as a modern penny). So I had 2 firsts today, my first Indian and my first coin from the 1800's.

By 2:30 p.m. I found a total of 25 coins - 13 Lincoln Memorial cents, 1 Indian Head cent, 1 wheat cent (1956-D), 1 nickel, 1 Merc dime, 5 Roosevelt dimes and 3 quarters. All the clad had recent dates.

I was also approached by 2 people during my hunt..one lady from across the street said her house was built in the 1930's (another potential yard), and after that the lady next door walked over, so I told her about the coins I had found. Without even asking, she gave me permission to check her yard, and it's even bigger than the one I checked today..the house is more than century old as well. It was getting late and I was too tired to thoroughly search another yard, so I told her I'd come back.

If anyone knows a way to bring out the details on this common date IH without ruining it, please let me know..I've cleaned lots of wheats but never attempted to clean one of these.

Congrats on that milestone! One of the bonuses of yard hunting is the likelihood of other yards being offered. Even if a particular yard doesn't yield much, the visibility often leads to places that are way better.

Thanks you guys..I was reading lostlake88's post about his large cent..Kas mentioned the heated peroxide method..I didn't heat the peroxide the first time (D'OH!) so I tried it. Boy did it fizz out some crud! I thought the results were great despite the pitting and corrosion.

I think I was more excited about finding the IH than anything I've dug up all year!

Nat,
A big CONGRATS of your first IH & 1800's at that!!! The IH came out great. I remember finding my first IH last year (1874) at the farm spot. I was so excited, because I think that is one of the best looking coins ever made.
I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more great finds at your new spots.
Way to go!

Congrats on some "first" Nat! It's always nice to get them under your belt. Pound those yards hard, go all metal if you have to! Congrats!

Yeah it felt just as good! Nice of you to remember..that '53 Benny was a shock too (I kept saying "NO WAY...NO WAY..." out loud! Firsts always stand out in our memory, especially when you're not expecting it to happen.

Thanks to everyone I didn't mention by name..your support means alot to me and gives me more incentive to hunt all the more intensely!

she's a beauty no matter what. ;) indians always read a bit lower like a new penny and sometimes the reading is a bit jumpy. now you got a feel for them. any decent reading in a yard i would dig. people generally didnt trash the heck out of their yards. well at least the front. good luck on finding your second one soon!

Natman,

Congratulations on the find. The Indian head penny is one my favorites. I usually start cleaning with a little soap and water and a soft tooth brush. Only if needed do I go to heated peroxide ( 90 - 120 seconds in the microwave and a glass bowl or small jar. It so cool to watch it fizz. Be careful about putting you fingers into the HOT peroxide! (From Experience). I move them with a tooth pick and tweezers. After rinsing either cleaning method with distilled water I apply a coat of Renaissance Wax. This keeps the penny from oxidizing. Used by museums. Of course only clean until you can see a date, then check it out. You don,t want to devalue a rare find. Once you are sure it is not or you know you will keep it anyway, go for it!

Thanks all, and for the detailed method and safety tips Ed..I pretty much did that with my Indian. It's worth much more to me than any collector value just because I found it. I'm sure you and many other hunters here feel the same way. It's quite a feeling just knowing that the last person to ever touch it has been gone for years - all the lives and events that have come and gone from the time it was lost to the time I found it last Sunday boggles my mind. All I basically care about is a legible date, and for other people to know what it is just by looking at it. I don't care much about its condition, it looks fine to me and I'm sure we've all seen worse! What simply happened is nature reacted to a foreign object in the ground. It became pitted it in certain areas from a hundred years of moisture, which is common for these coins. Actually I'm surprised it came out looking as good as it does.

Anyway with that said I couldn't be happier with my very first IH, and now I know it's possible for even me to find one ;D

If I happen to be lucky enough to find another you'll hear about it here.

i think only other detectorists can truly appreciate everything else about a found coin besides the coin itself. ill never forget my first IH, i almost went into shock. i ran out and bought a whitmans folder for indian heads. ;D most of the time i find that they give jumpy, lower readings. like maybe its junk but maybe it isnt. then when you flip the plug or get it out of the ground at least then the reading stabilizes and then you know you might have one.

Congrats on your first indian......... :) All you have to do is ask! Most people are very interested in what has been lost on there property, and like you said the person next door is just as curious and before you know it. You will be detecting the whole street......lololol Well maybe not the who street .. But that would be nice.....Great job! HH
