Congrats Dan, you should start a fanpage! Maybe my next post it'll be a picture with no info at all and I'll get double the support. That's the only thing I've learned from this post. I don't understand what is wrong with asking him how much the gold weighed? these are only curious questions to learn something for I have no intention of traveling anywhere in hopes of finding gold. I guess the moderator was also at fault for asking questions? I guess it's good there wasn't a snake involved in this thread.

Nothing wrong with asking questions, Jeff also asked questions, but Jeff didn't harress Dan for not giving more information as some did. Dan gave as much information as he wanted to give. I can think of several reasons for not giving the information myself.........

good try, any comments harassing the poster would have immediately been pulled and we both know that. I can think of reasons for not posting ALL the details, but completely ignoring folks is what we were pointing out.

He did not completly ignore people, he posted info on how it was found, and why they decided to crush it up to divide it up among theirselves, he declined to revel how much the gold weighed or total value of it, which is his right, and completely understandable...Not revealing that information when asked does not make him rude.

Now since there was six of us there when the rock was found, we discussed as a group and we decided it was best to divide up the rock and it contents evenly amongst all of us.....

I know that by dividing up the rock it will make some people cry......we thought about selling, but opted out.....the general consensus was to crush and divide evenly......so, so be it..... If I had found it solely, it would have been a specimen for life.

As far as the total weight in gold goes, we are going to stay tight lipped....sorry. Everybody is happy with their share.....So now it is time to move on and look for more gold.....I know somewhere out there, there is more gold to be found.....and I will start looking again tomorrow......the hunt for gold is addicting and a lot of fun...so get out in the great outdoors and go find some color and have some fun......I am glad I was able to share pictures with all of you fellow treasure and gold seekers.....This just goes to show that there is still plenty of that AU out there just waiting to be found.

best wishes and happy hunting

Strick calm down bud!!!I hate to be a kill joy but.......(well first hey nice specimen!)a 20 lb rock doesnt mean squat!!!What happens if you have a 100 pound rock with a little gold showing??Does that mean I have 25 pounds of gold? :icon_scratch:Not.There is a formula to figure it out and it doesnt employ water, and it is a guestamate. The only true way to get an accurate idea of whats in it would be to crush and pan...which I dont recommend. You are not going to get $1000x 20 either if you do send that buyer my way!Collectors whom pay specimen are not buying right now,I cant blame em.The finder sounds knowledgeable so I am sure he will do whats right.I would get an X-Ray of it were it me

Not to fault your logic, but the math leaves a lot to be desired :laughing7:

If (and we know it isn't, need to deduct the host rock weight) it was 20 lbs of gold it would be more like 20lbs x 14.5833333* = 291.666666 troy ounces x $1100 (spot price give or take) = $320,833.00

*1 pound = 14.5833333 troy ounces

I agree. If (I know, another IF) it was even worth 10% of that, $32K, that's still an amazing eyeball find (heck even 5% would work for me :tongue3:).

Does anyone know what the formula is to estimate the weight of gold vs host rock?

What do you think a mining company would do with this thing? Save it for posterity?

I wouldn't be surprised, if an unusually large piece of gold was found in a natural state in a gold mine, that the company responsible would display it intact at their headquarters, or sell it to a casino in Vegas (or somesuch) for public display with a notation on where, and by whom, it was found.

Cal,there is a formula available on-line(I forget the name of it)but it is still a guesstamate.Any gold found is a bonus! Its just after you have been doing this for the many years I have a many others you get kind of Jaded, not saying its not an awesome piece it is,its just not retirement material.I would be on the hunt for where it came from!

Mining Co.'s have done just that. The Jamestown Nugget found in Tuolumne Calif.was just that,it was barely saved and is on display at Ironstone Vineyard in Murphys, but it weighs 44 pounds .However it was saved in the nick of time as it was going up the belt into the crusher by an employee that just happen to notice it.Normally no one would have seen it.Big Co.'s are about tons per hour....production,they are not on the lookout for species. That is why certain species are more valuable because the mining co's are not looking for them so the are rare. The piece above would not qualify for display by them sorry!

I was gunna say it looked like gold to me.

To crush it up, oh dear, it would be cheaper to have ya 5 mates topped!

I hope its full of gold!

Dan,
I say get your buddies together at a local casino. Play one hand of high stakes poker with the dealer
from the Casino dealing. The winner of that hand gets the WHOLE rock.
At least that way one of you could keep it intact!

Before you guys react to the $$$, you should see what kind of market there is out there for such a specimen.
Even paying all the taxes on a sale like this would still leave you at least 0.50 cents apiece! :laughing7:

What does it mean to be "topped"?

Well first I just have to give the man congradulations" That said...I am tring hard to wrap my mind around why an experienced treasue hunter? would crush such a Great specimen. These are the one's we all look for and work hard to find for years..Many (Like myself) have not and most likely will not find a 20lb gold filled rock. Heck I would have given you and your 5 others...BIG Money to put that in my collection. Pitty

Again...good work.....BUT "
