Hi Fossis!

Thanks for the welcome! You can probably make enough calamari to feed the entire neighborhood with one giant ammonite! :D

I heard that if you saw them and polish them they are worth a lot of money. Is that true?

These in this area are rather chalky,
but those found in Africa & other places take a
polish very well, & are a collectible.
here are some pics of Ammonites, & others from
Africa, the locals make a living cutting, & polishing
them for export.

That looks to be an Eopachydiscus ammonite from the Duck Creek formation in far south Oklahoma (near Texoma?) .

in my neck of the woods.
I heard in Southern Ok, the ranch hands throw them in
mudholes for fill.

I think that those large Texas specimens are internal casts (steinkerns) of the ammonoid shell. The cast is made of fine grain limestone (which will not take a polish) that infiltrated the shell cavity.

Then there are Late Cretaceous ammonoids from the Dakotas which still retain the nacreous shell and need no polishing.

Thanks Harry, I should have remembered that. There
was a site in this area where the ammonites (ammonoids) had a pearly finish but
although I saw some that came from there, I wasn't as lucky.......

I know a lot like them natural but
Those polished ones are just beautiful.
Not sure most found in Texas could be polished like those.

Welcome to Treasure-Net, you're probably right about that.
