Oh boy, am I glad I saw this thread! I found a rock a couple of years ago during one of my creek hunts that is the coolest rock I have ever seen. I have been using it as a paperweight on my desk. If you could tell me what it is I would be thrilled!

It is so brilliant that pictures really can't do it justice.

I just LOVE this thread!

How do you determine flint from quartz from the outside? They look the same to me! Sometimes, when I crack them open, some will look like glass and others look granular.

I do believe what you have there is a Cupro Cassiterite in quartz mica schist (Rare) and you have an excellent sample. better than most rock shops! cuprocasseriite in mica.JPG Nice FIND!... that being said you might also have a Slim chance of it being Chrome Lawsonite.. again rare but the crystaline structure is much smaller than i would expect from lawsonite,, leading me to believe that it is Cassiterite! GL and may you find many more!

the flint got hot enough to melt the entire "glob" to fluidity... in alot of cases the minerals didn't get hot enough or suffer enough pressure and or even picked up matter as it was kicked out of the earth.. these last shots are showing molybdenum (purple) and tons of othe minerals.. looks like th quarts got splattered into or mixed with the surrounding stone and cooled with it .. still very pretty!

Rocks from California beach

Found these on the beach near Carlsbad, CA. I think the white ones are probably limestone or quartz. I couldn't get a better picture of them. But it is the green and reddish one that I'm the most curious about.

Please help me look at this rock. I am not an expert; rather a novice.
It seems to be quartz veins, and there are some shiny metals but some are silver colored. Others I'm guessing fool's gold. But some of the rocks (taken from a river) I cracked and brought home have what seems to be gold. Any comments, tips, or advice will be appreciated.

OK so the first two in white are Quartz , The green is a Olivine Granite Marinace, (aka the olivine or Periodote is in a large enough quantity to make the granite conglomerate take on the green of the olivine or periodote) and is one of the most popular (and expensive) used in countertops today! Green_Marinace.jpg

As for the 3rd picture it is a REd quartz with inclusions... would probably be absolutely gorgeous sliced in 1/2 with a tile saw.. (to keep the polished look use a a little bees wax rubbed into the cut 1/2 if you dont have any use a little parafin wax on the stone after heating it to a warm temperature in hot water)

The color and appearance looks to me like Valleriite IMG_20130402_184427_402 (1).jpg it also looks Valleriite.jpg ... I've found it recently and it becomes a reall bugger to get out of gold..lol but it being a sulfide minerals are a class of minerals containing sulfide (S2−) as the major anion. Some sulfide minerals are economically important as metal ores. The sulfide class also includes the selenides, the tellurides, the arsenides, the antimonides, the bismuthinides, the sulfarsenides and the sulfosalts.[1][2] Sulfide minerals are inorganic compounds. And most of these are toxic.. so as I've said beffore... "Don't Lick the rock" and wash your hands. They sell well as rare specimens.. most rock shops have them ... and they are all marked SOLD...

Thank you.

These are ALOT like what my mine has been yielding from.. The rocck will be extremely hard and yes there are ALOT of Pyrites and other sulfides.. but if you get to a good Vein (in white quartz) you migh be able to yield quite well.. My Vein is yielding 2 OZ GOld fine 999.95 out of 8lbs of hard rock. I have also found that the rock itself has good gold formations in it being as hard as it is but the only way to really tell is to Smash pulverize and Crush it down to powder and pan it out. (the rock itself is a metamorphic mineralization of Molybdenium, copper, titanium, quartz, olivine, iron, iron sulfide (pyrite), silver lead gold arsenic , and like 13 other minerals... look toward Talc and Iron red spots within the area for your best veins!

Howdy! well you have rose Quartz in pink there (looks gorgeous cut with a tile saw and use the bees wax to keep the polished look) and the second looks like Bull Quartz (the orange is iron , and the Glimmer is mica ) We call it Bull Quartz because it is almost snow white, and usually when found this way mother nature has "Bleached" out its mineralization. This too can be very pretty when cut.. (ODD seems im on a Cut it in 1/2 roll today) Ive made bookends and just nice pieces out of some of the ones ive found.. and a cheap tile saw is like 30$ at harbor freight... it also allows you to "Peer" inside the rock with out smashing it..
