just wondering. I started in late January of '08. Man...I wish I'd started this 15 to 20 years ago...but hey, better late than never. There's still silver out there.
1-21-07 for me & had a ball doing doing it. Great hobby!!!!
Like you I wish I would have started years ago as well......probably would not have been able to keep it all back then....lol....had bills to pay. I'm curious to see the number of years of some of the longtime hunters.............
About 10 years, hot and heavy. Tapering off for now with the slim pickings out there.
Did find 2 - 40% halves
1 - 1943P silver war nickle and a bunch of 47-59 nickles
1 - 1964 quarter
Today. Interesting what you can still find. HH Gayle
I've been doing this since 1974. Of course for many years it was just cents and nickels, since I couldn't afford anything more. In that time, I've found over 100 Indian Head cents, the first one (a 1901) in January, 1978. The oldest coin I've found in a roll would be a Chinese cash from the late 1700's that I got earlier this year. I found a Civil War token one time and even got a 1919 Canadian silver 5 cents in a rolls of cents once. There's all kinds of stuff out there to be found.
Restarted late in 2006,primarily doing halves but occasionally do smaller denominations too. My brother told me that back in early 70s i used to go to bank and buy rolls of pennies to look thru but i don't remember what I found.
I did it as a kid back in the 60s - I sold all my silver in the 80s when the price went "Huntsville". This past spring I was out at our town dump and stumbled on a collection of Indian and Flying Eagle pennies that someone had tossed in an old box of kids books (my 1st dream box!). The coins were in one of those 1930's style boards and made up of circulated grade coins. That got me interested in coins again as I was checking the values of the coins on the net I ran across a few forums on CRH. This got me to pull out the old coin books and I've been a CRH ever since. I mainly search halves and dimes @ about 6 boxes a week along with whatever customer rolls I can lay my hands on.
I started around May or June of 2006. When I was a little chil-dren in the early 70s, I would go to the bank and buy a roll of pennies and look for wheatbacks. Lost interest after a little while.
I sorta got interested in metal detecting again (I had a really cheap detector back in the 70s). I still have not bought a new one, as I do not have the time. It would just collect dust.
But coin roll hunting is something I can do without ever leaving my living room, and I have not had to spend any money. Armchair Treasure Hunting rules!
about three months, and I like it. I don't buy as much as some of you guys do, but, I do buy a roll here and there. Yesterday, I bought two rolls of nickel, got a 1949 jefferson and a Buffalo without a date. I've been buying a roll of dimes here and there, a roll of nickels or two here and there, some pennies too. I've been filling slots in books with what I've gotten. No big deals but hey where I live, we have a short history.
I started as a kid mainly going through my parent's change back in the early 80's and for many years I occasionally got my mom to go to the bank for me to get $10 in pennies (and exchange out the old ones). I pretty much skipped my college years except for occasionally searching nickels when I was at the casino. Pulled my first buffalo (4 holes drilled in it) and my first war nickels doing that (mid 90's).
From when I finished college until about 2004, I would occasionally go and buy coins at the bank, but at the time I had a bank which was stubborn about selling even 1-2 rolls without charging a fee!!! Since I refused to pay the fee, I usually didn't get coins in any large numbers.
About 4 years I moved and was then close enough to one of the Indian casinos in my area that still had coin operated slots, so in 2005 I remembered finding a few war nickels in the slots and thought they had a better chance than at the bank, so I started going late at night on weekends (midnight-5AM) after primarily nickels with occasionally quarters mixed in. Found my oldest nickel to date in that first 6 months of casino hunting (an 1883 V-nickel "No Cents" variety). After awhile, I started to buy boxes of pennies at the bank (I had switched banks to one with no fee) and eventually tried nickels. And in my first box of nickels, got 4 buffalos and like 3 war nickels. At this point, I realized that going to the casino was no better or worse than going to the bank, so I started doing boxes at the bank when I could afford them instead of only the casino. And then eventually found a few local bank(s) that would sell me bags from their coin machines and well, the rest is history. So now I primarily just buy bags off coin machines and rarely get boxes. If I had more time I would probably supplement my low weeks with boxes, but I am so busy that I barely find the time to keep up with the bags I buy once a week.
Most of my collection is from roll hunting or other various methods of hunting for coins at face value. I inherited a very small amount from my dad and I have bought a few coins as well as one small collection, but otherwise the rest is from finds. I just find it so much more fulfilling to find it at face value than buying it. I guess its the thrill of the hunt that I find the most fun. You also just never know what you are going to find.
My oldest coin found in circulation was an old Roman coin, Constantine the Great (320 AD minted in Siscia) that was found earlier this year.
