Insulating my MD from radio/electro magnetic interference - possible?

Right smack bang on top of a hill which I am very interested in searching there are 4 or 5 radio/phone/TV masts that cause severe interference to my MD and make it sound like I'm listening to an out of tune 56k modem.

Is there any possible and feasible way to shield the MD to prevent this?

Are these 'waves' effecting the electrics or the coil?

Can I wrap it in tin foil(baco to most of you) and maybe my head to help it?

Cheers.

What detector are you using?

I would say the receiving part of your coil. If it was easy and helped it would have already been done.

Maybe Try a smaller coil & Lower sensitivity.

If you were using a wideband detector (PI/Explorer/DFX/CZ etc) which are more prone to interference, then I would suggest using a narrowband detector. But I'm pretty sure the 1236x2 is a narrowband detector. As Jeff suggests, a smaller coil or lower sensitivity might help. I would also try other make/model detectors, to see if you can find one with a frequency that is less susceptible.

Cheers for the advice fellas. However, the transmissions are so strong and in such close proximity (about 30 or 40m) that even when the controls are at their minimum it does next to nothing.
I doubt any metal detector would stand a chance considering how close I am to them.

I would also try other make/model detectors, to see if you can find one with a frequency that is less susceptible.
Carl, sounds expensive

Borrow from friends!

Wait for the next power blackout, then rush over.

I know they make a coil that only work out the bottom of it and not the top to help with ac problems that will fit my whites xlt. I thing it made by the same co. that makes the hot head coils. They may make you one for your fishers.

Kent's right, there is a "Bigfoot" coil made for the XLT (sold by Jimmy Sierra), which is a "figure-8" design and is about the best you can get for rejecting interferers. It will work on about any White's 6.59kHz detector, but not Fisher.
