Nice find Skipper, looks like it may possibly be a drill with the distal end broke off?

Interesting. What is and how did indians use a drill? Thanks for the information!

Drills are a tool form most often made from resharpened knives and arrowheads. They were used for drilling holes in stone, wood, bone, etc. Your piece has some characteristics of being a drill imo. But also could be a hafted scraper? A salvaged or reworked point might be the best way to describe the piece.

If you're interested in more on drills with lots of pictures and debate on use, check out my " Drills (Post yours here) " thread. Have a good one.

Not intending to be dis-agree-able, but the working edge that remains indicates it was probably a cutting tool rather than a scraping one -- that end of it, at least, was something like an ulu (semi-circular knife blade) with a built-in T-handle.

The awl (or drill) end (broken off) would have come to a narrow point, like a nail.

I'm with Uniface, appears to be more of a cutting blade or chopper then a scraper, could have been used for digging roots as well.....Hard to tell with poll end broke off.

That's blunt-end scraper. Crude but still nice.

I'm pretty sure it's a broken drill, possibly a Guilford round base. The " working edge " being the base.

I think thirty7's probably right.

What the heck is a "blunt-end scraper" :icon_scratch:

Jusy my best guess, there's not really enough there to make a confident call either way.

I think Newt is referring to what some call blunts or ' stunners '. Resharpened points used to stun game. This doesn't make any sense imo, because you see it frequently on knife forms. I personally think these forms are exhausted points that have been discarded.

I personally see blunts as scrapers rather then points to stun game. I don't think they were exhasted points either as I have seen the edges of plunts reworked to sharp edges. They reused everything they made so I believe they were broken points reworked into scrapers......Just my opinion...........

It appears to be an exhausted Guilford round base to me. I have quite a few of them..

Interesting, I have one pretty much just like that. Havn't posted it on here yet to find out some more about it. I kind of thought it was basicaly a used up "arrowhead". Mine has a notch thats smoothed off maybe from hafting.
