It's really hard to say, I tried magnifying the picture but it doesn't show up any better!

I Can't tell from the photo either. I had a couple 1916 ?? mercs and I took them to the coinshop in town and he used his high powered microscope and revealed them to be "S" mintmarks. If you have a coindealer near you I'm sure he'd have some sort of high powered magnifying device to make out mintmarks and the "L" on 1864 indianheads and other coin features that need magnifying. Just a suggestion. Also if it turns out to be a 1916-D he can give you an idea of what it's worth. Even if it's not the 1916-D , it's still always nice to find silver , so good job nonetheless. CoinShooter-Craig

Could be--but its net grade would probably be Fair 2 or 1... It ought to still be worth a couple hundred though--and a bargain to fill a hole in a Whitman coin album.

That's a great find--congrats!

Best Wishes,

Buckleboy

P.S.--I'd still be interested in seeing more photos, especially close-ups of the mintmark area before I offer anything more definitive.

Can't say 100% but it looks like the top to an s to me, Can you provide another photo or scan that would enlarge it and keep it in focus?

It can be inconclusive if you have a magnifing glass use it and judge for yourself. If it is it's severly worn i say it can only bring 10-100 in resale.

I agree... looks like the top of an "S".

Take the advice the others have given here though before you do anything with it!

Congrats!
