I've been hooked

I've seen a lot of hooks in my time but I've never seen one like this..any ideas? found less than a 1/4 mile from the revolutionary war Fort Warren in the woods,but I'm sure it's not from that period It was nearly a foot deep in the ground.it's displayed next to a quarter for size comparison,i dont have a bigger picture sorry

guess theres no takers so far..this was quoted on another site..sound familiar? That is an early pen closure for stables and such, the plantation I go to still has them on some of the horse stalls.
