"JANUARY,1820, while keeping the WASHINGTON HOUSE"

Good information! Can someone prove it to be accurate?

The information on post #96 has been proven accurate many times over on several TN Beale threads, in the NEWS & ADVANCE newspaper, and in Fawcett's letter to Friedman.
All have been discussed many time over with provided links, it it is amazing that you missed reading this information.

...and the up and down fortunes during that period of James Beverly Ward that caused motivation to act as "agent" and publish the Beale Papers.

Another crypto expert that could not break the codes! LOL

To whom are you referring, masterpoe, "as another crypto expert who couldn't break the codes"?
So far there is NO documentation that anyone has ever broken the two remaining Beale codes.
With that said, this thread is not a discussion on the codes, but on the discrepancies in the Beale narrative text that would have been obvious to those purchasers of the dime novel pamphlet in 1885 Lynchburg alerting them that is was a fictional story.

It seems that anyone who post real facts and documented evidence that prove that the Beale perilous adventure treasure story never happened outside of the Beale Papers dime novel pamphlet are branded "anti- Beale" by masterpoe.
...yet masterpoe never presents even the minimal proof that Thomas J Beale and this fictional treasure tale has any basis in fact to support his "pro-Beale" stance beyond his claims concerning someone who claims without any outside certified documentation having correctly "solved" the Beale codes.
Instead of "pro-Beale", he should call it "pro-Laf".

PROXY-mania!

AN ATTEMPT TO RETURN TO THE DISCUSSION

"Curiously enough, he(Beale) never adverted to his family or to his antecedents, nor did I(Morriss) question him concerning them, as I would have done had I dreamed of the interest that in the future would attach to his name"
-THE BEALE PAPERS

What is interesting about this statement, during his stay at the Morriss home, he became "universally" known, yet no one inquired about his family or where he was from?...
"His (Morriss) kind disposition, strict probity, excellent management, and a well ordered household, soon rendered him famous as a host, and his reputation extended even to the other states. His was the house par excellence of the town, and no other fashionable assemblances met at any other"
-THE BEALE PAPERS

Beale became universally known during his stay at the house of Robert Morriss whose reputation of par excellence "extended even to the other states".
This is another mention of "house" and not the Washington Hotel which the real Robert Morris began keeping in 1823, a good 3 years after the alleged stay of Thomas J Beale at his home.
It is also a curious statement that the house of Robert Morriss extended beyond Lynchburg to the other states in 1820.

"In 1803, he married Miss Sarah Mitchell, a fine looking accomplished young lady...In obtaining such a wife, Mr.Morriss was peculiarly fortunate, as her subsequent career fully demonstrated. The happiness of Mr. Morriss however, was of short duration, and reverses came...and left him nothing save his honor...It was at that time Mrs. Morriss exhibited the loveliest traits of her character" -THE BEALE PAPERS

While Sarah Mitchell Morriss is mentioned in the Beale story, it is in a brief and minor role-directing her husband to the hotel business after failure in the tobacco business, and the home at which she passed away, which so happened to be that of James Beverly Ward, copyright holder and publisher of the Beale Papers.
What was the subsequent career that she fully demonstrated?
...and did she discuss the Beale iron box, letters, ciphers and the treasure story with her niece, Harriet Emmaline Otey Ward that so occupied her husband, Robert's last 16 years attempting to fullfill his obligation to this "Thomas J Beale"?

I do not believe Robert Morriss was strapped for money as the story claims? Who really knows the finances of a neighbor or another individual. In 1818, Robert Morriss made a real estate deal that netted him $50,000. over a ten year period. This alone gave Robert and Sarah Morriss an income of over $5,000 a year until 1828. This did not include his business partnerships with his brother in law William Mitchell and their three story mercantile business. Nor his partnership with James Dunnington a Captain in the War of 1812. This does not include all of Robert Morriss holdings in over twenty large tracts of farm land. I have a list where he was selling some over 700 acres in four different counties. This man was not broke. I believe he went into the Ordinary or Tavern Business just to meet people and be with other people to learn what was going on in the surrounding area.

So would this be another discrepancy that would have been noticed by those in 1885 Lynchburg?

MORE info, please...

So far the differences between the character "Robert Morriss" of the Beale Papers and the actual Robert Morris are:
Robert Morris did not build the first brick building in Lynchburg.
Robert Morris began keeping the Washington House in 1823, not 1820.
Robert Morris was NOT in dire financial straights before keeping the Washington Hotel

It is NOT KNOWN if Robert Morris:
Knew or had as guests Coles, Witcher, Clay, Jackson, and Chief Justice Marshall.
If his hospitality was known in other states
If his wife, Sarah Mitchell Morris had a subsequent career outside of the Washington House.
If a Thomas J Beale ever stayed at his residence, left the iron box containing ciphers, and sent letters from St Louis.

The entire Beale treasure story is based on the alleged second hand hearsay account written in a finished manuscript by an author who wished to be unnamed that he gave to James Beverly Ward to act as agent for copyright and publishing.
Was the real reason that this author desired to remain unknown was to avoid any and all lawsuits from those 1885 unwary readers who despite all the clues to the contrary, believed the treasure story true and neglected their legitimate business to the point of financial ruin attempting to get rich quick by buying a book, getting a shovel and digging in Bedford county.

Just a few "minor" things... YES, Robert & Sarah MORRIS did "run" their Washington HOUSE/INN in 1820 or so; yes, Robert MORRIS did "run" the Washington HOTEL in 1823; Thomas J. Beale MAY have been a "Code name" for someone like one of the Lafitte Brothers (NOT Jean), as a "connection" to New Orleans, then St. Louis (Big "Muddy" & FRENCH "connection")... BUT! GREAT SECRET was revealed in the "2nd year of the Confederate War" by RM. SO! Go from THERE!
