Shaun7 joined me for this final hunt of '08. Its my 2nd Fav field & hasn't been planted yet due to wet weather.
We started at just after 0800 (see pictures of frost).

Within 5 mins I had the 2 roman coins I needed to make 500 for the year. (finished on 510)

I got a rare Roman Silver (for this field) of Gallienus AD253-268

Cru'dad joined us after Lunch & although he got no roman coins he did get a Hammered Halfgroat of the Commonwealth.

12 Roman Coins
6 Lead Tokens
4 17th Century Tokens
Poor Medieval Horse Pendant
Medieval Buckle
Lovely guilded Todor leather Decoration
& a few buttons

So finished on a high, I will post year totals when I get time....

Your finds are amazing and I sure can't wait until I see what you will do next year!!! You seem to find a ton of buttons, am always curious as to the rarity of many of them??? Sweet way to end the year!!

No idea on button count, maybe I will count in '09 in your honour :)
Thanks, just put them into a container and weigh them on a personal scale I guess, it would take a few days to count them. Then you could see how many stone you get every year....then put them in a sack and raise them on the flag pole

That XP just sucks up Roman Coins.
Told you so...

As you say the stubble is now easy to work & the settled & wet conditions are perfect for deeper finds.
That's neat. I call the field to the right of the photos (by the way great photos) the Button field, and the whole farm the Button farm. You know why

Shaun did good with the Lobo (until it started playing up due to water on the coil) but he is still travelling home.
Hmm, it could not be water on the coil, never had any problem with that, even searching in the water. Tell him to remove the cover on the coil and clean it. Then inspect it very carefully for cracks or small holes. If there are any the chance of repair are slim, could try to dry it out first (just put in a warm place for a week or more) then test it, if good seal the hole then (not before). My friend with a Garrett had such a problem, but we could not repair the coils.

Otherwise it could be the cold (it looks cold there) on the detector or batteries. I always use the Lobo hanging from my belt, under my coat when it is cold or freezing (actually always). DO THIS with every detector if you can when its very cold. And don't forget the colder it is the less strength the batteries will have, so keep reserve batteries in a pocket next to your body, and keep the detector, until used, in a warm place, not in the boot of your car where its too cold.

If those things were not the problem it could be like Silver Searcher says, water seeping into the control unit. Was it raining? Don't think so, so water in the coil or coldness

As you can see the 4 hole type are very common.
Victorian buttons are fairly common
Very rare - pewter 18th century militia buttons
Tudor & Medieval - some what rare
