Not a great picture (its from my cellphone), but below is a pic a (1910) V-Nickel that I found a few days ago on the end of a roll in a box of nickels from Chase.

I also got a 1937-P Buff (in really lousy shape), 2 War Nickels ('43 and '45, both P), 3 1939-P, 8 other 1940s and 7 from 1950-1955. Oh, and 33 2009-D.

This was my first V-nickel found in the wild, and when combined with the other finds I can say that this was my best nickel box so far. IMG00041-20110527-1833.jpg

Whenever I get a new box I always look at the end of the rolls. One time I saw a 1920 Lincoln penny right there in the front.

"Is there something special about 09-D nickels?"

The '09s had the lowest mintage of a regular production nickel since the late 1950s.

2009 P 39,840,000
2009 D 46,800,000

This is on the order of 5%-10% as much as "normal" production for the last 10 or so years. As a result, someday they may be worth more than the average nickel. Since nickels in general are worth more than face value (about $0.07), saving them for when the composition is changed and the melt-down of the present composition nickels is allowed makes sense. I won't, however, keep all of the nickels that I get from banks, there are just too many. So I have a forced savings of about 1-2 rolls/week of 2009s, plus whatever older or more scarce things I find (plus silver from halves and dimes and war nickels). It isn't a lot, but so long as I'm going to put away some "normal" nickels, they might as well be the less common ones that still cost only a nickel a pop.
