My First "Reale" Find and some relics

TnT2000 and I decided to try a new spot we have been researching. the day started so foggy that it was a little difficult seeing the road getting there. After being lost (just a little lost) we stopped and bought a local map and were able to find the spot. We got out and walked behind the truck and I realized I left my tailgate open for the 60+ mile trip. Fortunately the detectors survived the trip without falling out.
We went into the heavily wooded area and got nothing but staticy signals everywhere so the day didn't start off good. after several hours of diging hot rocks and pull tabs I managed to get what I believe is a "Bridal Rosette". The next target was some type of buckle with a wierd face on it. (Any help with ID would be appreciated). After another hour of junk signals I got a solid quarter signal on the XLT @ 1.5 inches. To my great surprise It was a spanish reale 178?. (Last number not readable).
I don't know what type reale it is so any help on that would be greatly appreciated. The rectangular item is all brass with a number 1346 on the inside. Possibly the trim off a mail slot. The ring appears to be an old hand made copper ring. The forks will be a present for my wife for her birthday and I hope she will be happy with her new silverware. So after a rough start to the day Things turned out great.
Thanks TnT for all the research and the spot to hunt.

Thanks for looking

Should give you the name on the front if you can see it. Looks like a Ferdinand III?

Some nice finds there by the way.

That's what I'm talking about! Nicely done!

To ID the denomination of your reale check for the "R". If it is just an "R" then it is a half reale. If it is not a half reale there will be a number before the "R". What size is it?

That is wrong, bud. If there is no "R," then it is a half real.

Oops...I stand corrected! I always looked at the "R" for Rex and assumed that was for half reale...learned something today. Guess I have to go out and find a half reale myself.

I also learned something today. I didn't know to look for the "R". I would identify mine by the size - smaller than a dime, it's a 1/2 reale, bigger than a dime, but a lot smaller than a quarter, it's a 1 reale.
Also, just for those who don't understand why Spanish Reales are found in States that were the original Colonies, up until 1857 Spanish Reales and some other foreign currencies were accepted as legal tender.

Re: My First "Reale" Find and some relics

Ken, Congrats on finding your first Half Real, that is what it is, not a One Real or anything else, I am posting a photo showing a Half Real, One Real, and a Two Reale.

As you can see the Half Real, which is dime size or smaller, depending upon year of mintage, but it does have an R but no 1! So you cannot go by the R, it is rather easy once you see them, the Half Real is so thin, a lot of times bent, worn heavily, and is dime size or smaller.

The One Real, is Nickel sized and does have the number 1 followed by R on the left side. Some older One Real will have Roman Numeral I instead of the number 1.

The Two Reale, is bigger than a Quarter and will had the 2 or II on the coin along with an R.

In general Half Real will be the most common Spanish silver found in the east and most will be King Charles III (Carolus)

Don

Re: My First "Reale" Find and some relics

Thank you everyone for the help with the ID. It is definately the size of a dime. The writing is the same as the Half Reale in the Picture Don posted. I can see the date of 178 and I can't see the last number. Thanks again to everyone
