Yesterday, I went back to where I found the 1793 Half Cent on Tuesday and about 10 feet from where I found it, I found this 1869 Shield Nickel. It was a awesome way to end 2014 and good way to start 2015.

Here are some flat buttons I found in the same area.

Very nice find... and a nice visible date. Good show. I found my first V nickel about three weeks ago. The only good place on it was the date... whew. GL&HH!

Big congrats on your first Shield! I remember my first one, it was an accidental find! I was chasing a wheaty signal in the hole, after recovering it, I re-scanned the hole and heard a gold/foil/nickel tone I didn't hear originally and about three inches deeper I pulled my first Shield Nickel. It's in fair condition although I can't get a definitive date 188? On 1-4-15 I found my 2nd one at a new field site, it is an 1866 with rays! I used an sos pad to clean it. they are pretty tough and can take a good scrubbing, but if you decide to use this method try it on another junk nickel first and determine if you like the result.
Here's hoping you find many more!!

I've got it soaking in mineral oil to see if that will get rid of some of the crud. I don't want to do anything too extreme since it's already in pretty good shape.
