i dont know about the navy buttons but i can promise you that University of the south button is an awesome find........it is one of 3 designs approved for Tennessee soldiers....I had one that i sold on ebay for $365

USMC Buttons 1812-1850, I have 7 of them undug that I bought at a local antique shop mixed in with WW II buttons, I spent about three months trying to ID the exact same buttons.

armchair what is the back mark on your 7 undug buttons . I'm really trying to find info on the back mark that is on the two buttons that I dug . Thanks for the reply . David

Hi Felinepeachy : The top of the anchour on the two buttons that I dug does not appear to have a chain link , as does the one in the photo that you supplied . Thanks for your reply . David

There were a zillion button face types, each slightly different and Peachy has probebly found the closest match possible. The back mark is proving difficulty to find though. At least on-line...

Compare yours to these links... If anything it's Navy and not USMC.
