My hunting buddy and I secured an early 1700's home as a detecting site Sunday afternoon :)

We hunted for a few hours and pulled some nice relics as well as coins!

He dug two silver G Dub Ya's, two Rosies, the biggest keg spicket eva and a really, really cool musket trigger housing :o

I was just begging to find a Barber...

Minutes later I had my first Barber dime, an EF 1910!!!

It will fit in nicely between my 1891 Seated and 1916 Merc ;)

My relics included some really cool suspender clasps, a button (matches one I found a few weeks ago on the other side of the county, they both say "Treble Plated") and assorted buckles!

I also dug three Wheaties... 1928, 1935 and a 1944 S.

We just knew there had to be more silver at this joint and made plans to return Monday morning.

We just could barely wait to start swingin'!

Before my buddy knew it... he had found a 1945 War Nickel... then a 1927 Walking Liberty Half, a 1945 Merc and yet another War Nickel this one a 1943!!!

All I found was this bad bear pictured below.... ::)

I guess it was time for my MineLab to pay for itself ;D

Thanx for looking at yet another boring ol' coppa brought to you by...

Excellent coin! Excellent condition, although its being dug will reduce the value of course. I would imagine it is still worth about $400 though.

Cheers!

Don't know about that. I can't tell which variety that is, or if its one that isnt listed in the redook. clean it off and look for them stars between the beads!have a pro do it though. Dont do it yourself. one slip and its worthless. then thumb your nose at 400 bucks. Of course if it doesnt have the stars it sounds like its just a lousy 400 dollar coin... :) Nice work there. I'de kill for one of those.

Look another Small-bany, NY resident!

Yeah, I've only rinsed it off with water...

Hmmm... where should I send it for a cleaning and grading?

Remember I'm still a newbie ;D

Nah, the site isn't real trashy.

Some tinfoil here and there.

The lawn is littered with what looks like spark plug washers... these ring up nice, so I just had to dig 'em.

Other then that the lawn was a pleasure to detect.

I found the coin 15 feet off the front stoop.

BTW This site was secured with full permission ;)

We even have permission to detect two adjacent fields and another home from the same era owned by this same person!

The other home site looks as promising as this one did... maybe even better :)

Rumor has it that both sites were active parts of the underground railroad :o

Thanx for looking and all the great comments!

True. Obviously not the head of 1793 variety.

;D Congrats on such a beauty of a coin. I'd say that Minelab 50 you got there is paid for in full. Great find and great story, too. HH and keep us posted after you have it cleaned.

Anyone ? ...... Anyone ?

All 1794 Large Cents have edge lettering.

As far as sending it away, If it were my 1794, I would not, it has nice detail but is corroded and unless it is a rare variety of the 1794, it would not necessarily be worth it to me to get it cleaned and graded by NCS/NGC.

There are approx 56 or so varieties of the 1794 Large Cent, Red Book only brushes the surface on varieties of most coins.

If the photos were a tad better I might be able to attribute the variety, I will look and see if I can with your current photos. Unfortunately it is not a starred reverse.

I have attached a photo of what edge lettering looks like on a 1794 Large Cent, including the Oak Leaf after DOLLAR, this photo is of a S-19a variety, 1793 head type, rather rare, the oak leaf is diagnostic for identifying, since both the stem and leaf points down.

Don

The features needed for a positive ID are not showing to say 100% but it could be a Sheldon 57 variety, one of the more common varieties.

Congrats Nickel_B. That is one awesome coin. It is in really nice condition for coming out of the ground. As you know most of them don't even have any detail never mind a date ::) That one is a BIG keeper for sure.

Re: 1794 Large Cent - If you like boring old copper click here...

Thanx guys!

No matter what variety it is I'm still happy with the find.

It isn't expensive to get it graded and cleaned, so I think I'll still have it done.

It's the best coin I've found in my 3 month hobby career ;)

My third large cent in that time too!

Well the other two were brazed together... to make a magician's coin...

So is that consider one or two large cents :D

<still happy with his find>
