picked up a box of nickels and had some good results. here are my finds.

2009 D
1959 D X3
1958 D X3
1957 D X3
1956
1955 D X2
1954 D X 3
1952 S
1949 D
1948 S - THIS IS ALMOST UNCIRCULATED. LOOKS LIKE IT JUST WAS MINTED - ONLY 11.3 MILLION KEY DATE
1947
1946
1946 S - ON 13 MILLION - KEY DATE
1944 S - WAR NICKEL SILVER
1942
1941 S X2
1941 D
1939 D X 2
1938 S - ONLY 4.1 MILLION - KEY DATE

I am pretty happy with this box of nickels.

My box of dimes was a skunk. only got 1 2009 d and a very nice BU 1965 dime. looks new. crisp edges and very bright

also have a box of pennies to go thru. looks like lots of copper in this one. will post results later. HH

wow, that is a terrific box, I need both 1939d and 1938s for my nickel date collection. Have done 30 boxes or so of nickels and still need 1938d 1938s 1939d 1939s and 1950d, and to get all those in 1 box, :notworthy: :headbang:

Thanks guys. I was very surprised too. And all this from a brinks box. Was starting to wonder if it was someones collection that got cashed in. I am going back tomorrow to get another box of nickels. let hope there are more key dates. :)

Excuse my ignorance here...but what is the significance of the pre 1960 nickels? I know about the War Nickels, and Buffalos, but what about the others?

All the low-mintage ones that are harder to find happen to be pre-1960, as are many of the varieties worth searching for. It's really an arbitrary dividing line, but as good as any.

I save all pre-1960 Nickels. You can sell them online (in mixed rolls) or at coin shops (usually only the low minted ones).

That was a NICE box - I only save the pre 1950 nickels myself and the ones I need for my book. Perhaps I need to get a list of other low mintages to look for (like the 1950d I still need!).
