I'm alittle bummed out to realize something about my detecting personality... And wondered About others' preferences .
Now that I been detecting my own property for months And months ... And finds are becoming more rare .. I been trying out new places to hunt , and they just don't seem to have the same thrill for me. I enjoy detecting my grandparents' land and the woodland right close to my home . But it seems like unless I have a connection to the area I'm searching, the finds are just not as satisfying. Which is weird cause I'm curious about history everywhere. I knew I was a homebody , but didnt expect it to carry over to metal detecting.. Lol . Kinda stinks really, it puts a limits on things.
Does anyone else notice a pattern in their treasure hunting? What's yours say about you?

All I can say is that I enjoy finding what is in the ground. I like going to old places to see how old and how neat the finds are it really gets my heart beating when I see silver in the ground. Plus I like the water detecting it is really exciting when you see that glitter of gold in the bottom of your scoop.

I’m sure everybody’s preferences are different, and as far as a pattern I can only explain how this obsession has evolved for me. Started like most in the back yard and that only lasted so long. Next was the local parks and baseball fields. These areas gave up mostly recent drops but then a few silver coins popped out. That’s when things got serious. Researching one of these parks I found it dated back to the late 1800’s. Found some old pictures from back then with the place crowded with people. Since then I’ve found several old coins using the pictures as reference. Can’t help but wonder if one of the people in that picture dropped a coin I found a hundred years ago. Since then I have researched one site from local historical books and maps. I found several old coins and better yet three ink well lids which tied the site to the 1890’s school I knew use to be there. The school site now sits in the middle of a corn field. That brought things full circle and was very satisfying. The pattern I see is a creating a connection through the research, which ends when you find a good relic or old coin and wonder when the last time someone held this in there hand. I guess you create the connection if it doesn’t already exist.

Have you tried aunts uncles second cousins twice removed.

If you go back in your family history far enough you might end up digging for cannibals
In colonial James town

Yes. I tried my sister's house today, it's about 140 years old. My brother in law laughed at me the whole time . Lol. Then their neighbor came over and told me that I might find remains of a graveyard. He pointed to a house a 1/4 mile away and said the people that live there buried their pets that passed away.
I'm like " ohh , ok I'll be careful, thanks" . Like who hasn't buried pets in their yard and it's a metal detector, not a bone detector. Lol. I'm going back to my yard to dig up tractor parts ... Lol

It's seems I actually like to diversify. I love cache hunting. There is nothing like staring down at gold coins, Even silver coins. The location is always different. I also enjoy yard hunting. It can be very rewarding in many aspects, both historically and money wise. I get permission by linking. That is, I use the last yard owner as a sort of reference. I live just outside an area that was once used by the rich as summer homes many years ago. I made an 8x10 picture showing a 200 year old home and the things I found there. This can be verified by the owner. I will show the finds below from this one yard.

I have really relegated myself to a park hunter. I find enough oldies to satisfy myself. I also love the variety of targets you can find there. I will occasionally get permission on some yards and I really like those too. I used to hit construction sites but since they really started to fence them in I learned to like the other places I go.

I won't pass up any opportunities that present themselves. Just this week I got a nice merc dime in a field that was pretty void of signals, it was a complete surprise. It got me thinking of all the other places that I often pass up and I am starting to think I should swing a coil anyplace I get the chance. I have found a 1700's militia button in a lot in town once. Our city was not settled until 1847 but there were several trappers using the area in the early 1800's and possibly the 1700's.

You really never know where some things will turn up.

I'm more into iron hardware. I mean I'd take old coins and buttons and things if I find them of course... But iron relics are more my thing. I feel overwhelmed by a new site .. Like at my sister's. everything everywhere lit up.... Slag and coal and basically every square foot had a signal. I don't like feeling overwhelmed... Lol. I tried to hit the strongest signals first and dug up alot of coins , non old .
Then I'd try a few iron signals ... And dug up junk. I think my problem is not knowing how to start a new site , and that's why I enjoy the structure of my own property . Any suggestions on how to start a never before and old site?
Tben you mix in the fact that it's somebody's yard and so I won't dig more than a few plugs in each area.
I spent 3 hours there and dug up modern money, bolts, matchbox cars , cans, and various trash. Frustrating :(

i could use a carb for my 43 farmall h tractor if you find one lol! I do agree though i enjoy hunting places that i can relate to. Like the log dam logging camp at my great grandparents homestead lots logging and family history there. Parks don't thrill i rarely go there to many people i treasure hunt to relax not entertain a crowd and since i dairy farm mornings and evenings are pretty well booked!

one of the pictures didn't move down!

That hatchet would look good mounted like my ax. The v shaped looks like a small cultivator blade and the bottom one looks like the tang of a file. You must through your junk in a pile like I do. Frank...

coins-eagle legs.jpg coins-eagle.jpg Actually a yard sale find bought at face value.

In that first pic, is that a giant pull tab in the back left corner? :)

Sure it is more fun to find stuff in your own yard, but anything old to me tells a story and is intriguing.

As far as where to start in a new yard, I think you did it just right, mix it up dig some strong coin signals, dig some iron, probably no right, or wrong, answer.

Now that's getting creative with your pennies.. Lol. The only one of the 3 in that pic that never quite figured out was the chisel looking one.. You'd have to see the side view... I found an exact replica on some site, but I don't think they quite knew either . It was found near all the tractor parts in my yard.
