OLD railroad luggage tag..L & N R.R. LOCAL....

I found this at a very old homestead today. I had no idea what it was until I got home and cleaned it off. I'm having a VERY tough time trying to figure out how old it is!!!?!? I've went to several different sites and NONE of them have anything listed on this. Maybe one of you can help me!! The tag is brass and says L & N R.R. LOCAL has the number L11617 at the bottom. It also has what I believe to be a star at the top....first time I've found one of these and I'm pretty excited....

Re: OLD railroad luggage tag..L & N R.R. LOCAL....

Chartered in Kentucky in 1850, the L&N was one of the South’s early railroads and one of only a very few to grow into a major system without a name change. The name survived into the 1980s, when it was abandoned as part of the organization of CSX.
The reference site below gives a good history of the L & N including route maps that may correspond to your finding.

What you have is a Louisville & Nashville R.R. Baggage tag. Looks like it should date in the late 18.s or early 1900.s. Nice find. I recently sold a Tampa & Key west tag for $175.00 good luck.

Re: OLD railroad luggage tag..L & N R.R. LOCAL....

I appreciate the quick response. I've been to this site as well as several others that had actual pictures of old railroad luggage tags, but could NOT find any like the one I found today. I'm thinking its from the early 1900's (hopefully earlier). Maybe someone can find a tag similar to it and post it on here! I'd really appreciate it.

Re: OLD railroad luggage tag..L & N R.R. LOCAL....

I have one similar From the mopac RR, still in buisness, I found it where a Bank was being built in Hearne and the 1st RR terminal once was. Dont rerally know how old I figure B-4 1900 though, as there was no RR east to west at the time. So most folks went through missouri to Galveston-houston then north.
Wonder if mine has any value?

Usually value is determined by the number of this type item that is in existance and the amount of collectors that collect items from this RR. I couldn't find any items that have sold recently on e-bay so yours might be a rare find.
A low end value would be from $75.00 to $100.00 . That is just a guess.

Hers another from a older sight I am only guessing it to be a mail bag tag due to the sight it was found, any guess to its value would be great, I reckon its a one of a kind

Here is a pair that sold on e-bayfor $68.00 I don't think they are as old as yours or as scarce.
