Detected an old cabin site with only the broken stone chimney left. Was only able to detect for about 30 minutes but dug a shield nickel where the front door probably was. The front is fine and with the naked eye can read all words and see all stars. The back is corroded so only the shield is somewhat visible. The nice thing is that they were minted between 1866 and 1883. I'm certain this is not the only coin and I will be going back once the timber rattlesnakes go away for the winter.

The pic does not do the front justice. I had to manipulate it a little with Adobe since my camera is not good at fine closeups.

That's at least a 22-buck nickel no matter what shape it's in. If your camera is a digital, check the user's manual for a Macro function. That's good for coin shots if you have it.

Nice nickel! Barbers, Shields, Seateds, all on my Dusty Springfield "Wishin' and Hopin' " list.

Good luck with return visits to that site.

At least you can see/hear/avoid those rattlers!
All my recent "old foundation" hunts have been hampered by
deer ticks -- we have an infestation going on here in southern Ontario! The kicker came the other night when, after 5 hours of being home after detecting, I climbed into bed with my wife and found one crawling up my leg. I don't even want to think about where it was for those 5 hours. Yeesh!

Lake Erie/Ontario shorelines (far away from weedy fields) are looking pretty good for the next few weeks!

1867 was minted with or without rays. In dug condition there is not a lot of collector value, but they are still a great find.
