Just detected my wifes grandparents house here in Freehold NJ. I believe it to be late 19th century though most of the finds are newer. I got the silvers, lots of wheats and the button along small area next to the house. Button is a one piece. Any help on button id appreciated

Thanks. Its probably not super old being that it still has a lot of gilt left on it but it should clean up better

I think the button is 1820s navy? Not sure off the top of my head but it's a starting point I guess.

Thanks. Its definitely one of my best button finds but very odd to have been found in the yard of a much newer home

Toasted that button should date between 1820-1830. It's a nice early one. I believe 62B in The Alberts book if you have access to one. Is there a visible backmark?

Here is one that I used naval jelly on. I wet a qtip then dip it into the jelly. I then wet the button a bit and roll the qtip gently across the surface. I only do 20 seconds or so at a time. Then a couple drops of dish soap and rinse the button. This will neutralize the jelly. You just need to really be careful as the jelly can go from good to too much in a hurry....hence the short sessions
