This area is called the Nelson place there was a house somewhere here. Might be why there are unusual things here.

It was here back in the day so there wouldn't be much left but rocks and fruit trees. Or the such.

Question. Does a shadow sign still look kinda like what it's supposed to when the sun ain't right above it. And has any one heard of shadow signs made for different times of the day.

i found a site in the spring with a shadow sign and a sun sign, came back in the late summer and the shadow sign was still there but the sun sign was not

I really do believe that folks that came before us Knew more than we do because it was just a way of life for them, grafting trees, using stones to hold small sapling down until the sapling became a tree and Mother Nature made its presence known, I also know that a dead tree falling in the woods will bend sapling over and cause all kinds of strange things to appear . OLD Surveyor's notes are quite useful ( gota go to the Historical Library at the near by University Your USGS office in your town or next town can help too. , Really helps to get to know someone to take your hand and help guide you thru the process, its never too late to learn, the Historical Library has aerial photos starting in 1938 and you may be able to buy copies of maps of interest like old trails that will show up ( dimly ), try along rivers and streams use the USGS maps and follow where the terrain will allow for a wagon to travel it may be miles from the River / Creek, They are out there just gotta look. I found that doing research at the library when the snakes are out and when they are in their den hit the woods, when the leaves are off / on the trees will talk and tell you when to go.

Squash. Did you take note of the direction the sunlit sign was facing?

It should be facing a northerly direction.
The shadow part, technically speaking, can be facing easterly or westerly an can possibly even both.

As the sun rises in the east and sets in the west every day of the year, it will pass over the sign on that axis each day. It will make the shadow somewhat skewed.

However; the angle caused by the tilt of the earth, will only hit the northern ( southerly facing) edge on a few days each year.

Just finding a place where one can be very challenging

I hope this helps you find more.

Happy hunting.

Need more data. How deep is the hole?
How big or small is the hole?
What is the arch in the lower right corner?

Is there a better angle or pic showing more?

I'll get the measurements and post them for you. When I found this over a year ago I took pictures of it. Didn't think much about a square hole till I seen a post on one. It's not for from the small V I found carved in a large rock. Which is some around forty to fifty yards from a civil war encampment. The encampment has rock walls a large over hang fox holes where dug. But it was on a little flat 20 feet above the surrounding area backed up against a shear cliff.

That isn't a sun and shadow sign.
It's something much cooler!

The sun needs to be shining on the sign seen thru the hoyo.

The hoyo works like a gunsight.
Zoom in on what you see in the center hole. That's the money shot!!
The stuff on the wall, or bluff, or whatever it is holds the next move on the trail!!

What you see when you get there, may be a sun and shadow sign, but focus on what it says, with an open mind.

Sit there and try to get into the mindset of your predecessors, then start taking pictures!

I'm excited for you, seriously.

I am looking forward to a better close up from the hoyo and then good pics on the area that is visible thru the hoyo.
I can see what the credentials.

If my eyes aren't playing tulricks on me, I think there so a small cross near the
The center and a pointer near the middle of the right side.

Happy hunting
BE CAREFUL OUT THERE.
