Strange old token, holed? plugged? what is going on here?

Just out of the ground today. I have many questions about this little guy. Is it old or rare? Is it supposed to have a hole? Was it plugged like some coins I have seen or was it supposed to look like this? Does anybody know? I sincerely appreciate your help.

Mathies Nett, 79, died a heart attack at his home, 402 Freemont St., Kiel-- in February, 1956Mr. Nett was born at Marytown, Calumet County, on May 3, 1876, son of the late Peter and Gertrude Nett. He attended St. Mary Parochial School at Marytown and on Feb. 2, 1900, married the former Louisa Mahlberg of Jericho. She died March 13, 1929.At Marytown, Mr. Nett operated a cheese factory before moving to Kiel in 1908. There he was engaged in the tavern business for 20 years until his retirement in 1930.
