Sunday’s Finds xx

Today was a bit wild so obviously decided to go to our most open field on top of the hill…. 🙄 buffeted by the wind and rain we still had a great time. This field is the middle area of the old race course and I just love it up here. We have detected in here before but never found the enclosure/stands but today we believe we finally found it. Lots of pot and glass and pipes 😆 ! Didn’t find many coins, but at least we know which area to search!

But first let me share my find of the day… I believe it’s a horse pendant, it’s stunning, despite being bent, then a rather posh button, bobbin shot and musket balls more ammo, rusty buckle and possible strap end (?) 2 lead shaped bits big Roman nail, buttons, 3 pre dec coins and a mystery coin or token perhaps (?) … and the pipe bits.

Croxton Park is my favourite bit of our permission, not only does it have the old race course but was once a hunting estate and before that was the site of Croxton Abbey, it’s said the stone from the abbey buildings was used to build the stone wall surrounding the park, so pics of the race course with what’s left of the wall behind, also some info on the history of the racecourse. xx

And a pipe! Sure and thanks for the passing there of.
Alleged hygiene saw stems deliberately broken on tavern pipes. Extra long stems allowed such.
Not so much passing it around , as individual users having access to a common shared pipe. Just snap the part you put your lips on before using it. (A free use kept ones personal pipestem from being cleaned or replaced as often. If one not only had a pipe , but an unbroken pipe! Lets not have a customer leave because his pipe fractured or clogged.)
And a cooling effect on both smoke and the clay pipestem itself , vs a short personal pipe.

Those shillings look like counterfeits.
Or they just overly cruddy?

You've been finding a lot of bullets and musket balls lately. Did they fight a battle there?

we find musket balls in most of our fields tbh.. there was only 1 battle that we know of that was in 1645 between the Parliamentarians and the Royalist at the Castle.. which is on the otherside of the vale from these fields… not sure if they used muskets for hunting deer 🤔… thats what I assumed the ones we find are from… ?! xx

ahh thank you! I find it so interesting that he finds coins… which he loves and I find the bits I love! It’s like we have different Radars and head where the things we love are! 🤔 xx

Nicely done on the hanging pendent, right up there in things you like the best.
Lovely gold wash button, and the ball button is a sweet recovery.
Pipe stems put in an old glass sealer make for a nice display.
