I dug this shield nickel today. I am having trouble typing right now. The date is legible..My camera is having trouble picking up the details. Wish my HD camera was working. I have dug 1 shield nickel and 4 V-Nickels from a 20 ft square..Today when this one came out I could see the shield and knew it was a shield Nickel. I had no Idea it was 1 of 16,000 minted..May I introduce you to my best coin to date... I won't be cleaning this one.

I think I will just keep it like it is. I would be nervous about sending it off. It would pass through to many hands. I can still see details on the coin. I have a couple of pictures of it. That is all I need.

PCGS is the "real" authentication service, IMHO. NGC or ANACS aren't bad either, but are second tier as far as some people are concerned.

I'd definitely get it slabbed, if you're sure about the date. The photo is questionable, I'm sure it's easier to read in person.

Yeah the picture really doesn't get the detail the microscope can. It looks like there is a piece of crud on top of the bottom of the 0. I noticed that in the picture. I've had my wife and my neighbor look at it and they are sure it is a 0. Its the real deal. No doubt.

1880
Shield Nickel
Condition: VG-8

Value Trends

1950: $4.50
1980: $100
1995: $325
2003: $600
2010: $700

Gratz!.... Detector paid for!

One fine coin. CONGRATS! Yeah, some coins just have to be graded and authenticated by professionals. This is one of 'em. It'll pay you or your heirs big bucks in the future!

I would hate to be the party pooper, but the value of the coin has dropped ???. I have the 2011 Red Book. I had to do a double take to make sure I was looking int he right spot.

G-4 - $450
VG-8 - $550

Awesome find though all the same. I'll vote BANNER :icon_thumleft: just because there are only 16,000 of them. It's just a shame it is that red corrosion color.

I agree that this coin would grade G-4 in current condition. That's not being a party pooper, that's being realistic.

Thanks everone. I am just glad I saved it.
