..........Cold day in my part of Illinois today, 30ā€™s when
I got out to the site. No frost on the grass but when
I knelt down I got ice on my knee.

Plan was to hit an area that had been a toboggan slide area
that closed about 3 years ago.

Area was built up by the Civilian Conservation Corps as
a ski jump. In the 1930's the U.S. ski team practiced here
for the Olympics.

In the 40ā€™s it was turned into a toboggan slide.
Height is 90 ft; 121 steps to get to the top; would shoot
the sleds an average length of 800-900 ft; speed up to
around 50 mph.

This area has been hit hard, but my plan was to go in coin
mode on my Garrett and see what came up. After about
15 min, cold wind blowing at me, I started to think about
getting out of the wind. Iā€™m just not a coin shooter and
the woods were all around me. Soā€¦ā€¦ā€¦. ;D
Decided on doing some searching in the woods.

Started to follow a ravine with many feeder creeks coming
into it. Steep hills on both sides.

Followed one of the creeks checking here and there with the detector.
Everything was goodā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦.Until.
Lot of leaves, at spots they covered the small creek and you could not
tell where the water was. I was digging in a bank and sure enough,
one foot went into about 9 inches of water. Soggy walking for
about 5 min, but got better as I continued. :P

Glass shard in the creek bank.

As Iā€™m moving along I start hearing interlopers in my woods. >:(
Find out a crew from the forest district is out working, setting
up a burn. Setting up fires to burn the leaves and small branches
on the forest floor. MY FOREST IS BURNING.

Smoke, cough, cough.

Did get a coin hit, near a creek, rocks, sand, dirt, wet.

.........No idea what it is. About the size of a penny; can see the
ridge around the coin; strange thing is, it seems almost like
it is blistered. In olive oil now, hoping to get more info.
Reminds me of coins that have been at the beach for a
long time. Copper color like a penny, in fact the clear parts
are very clean, but looks like blisters on it. Parts were very
bright while it was in the hole

Also pulled up this shotgun shell.
From web:

shotgun shell

U.S. Cartridge Co,
1864 -1938, purchased by Winchester.
Did not get an exact match, U.S. on the sides
Not the top as shown. But it seems the older ones
Had the US on the side.

Also got a rifle cartridge, no idea. Only marking are
ā€œUSā€ and number ā€œ17ā€

Had a good time in the woods, again. Plan on giving
it a week or so and wait for the ash to blow off, and
check the area again. Just cannot seem
to keep out. Spent about 3 hours getting lost again. Really
interested in what the coin is. Any ideas, just shout.

All have a good unā€¦.

Re: PLEASE DO NOT POST-WORKING ON IT-THANKS

Assuming that its ok to no reply... I bet there's alot burried around there. that slide would be great for sledding when the time comes! I have no idea what that round thing could be. Looks like a coin but... dunno.

sorry...took a closer look at it. Its a lincoln penny. Can see the mint mark "D" and the word "God" on almost the opposite side.

>:( post 1982 penny. Damn them - around here, it seems like if they've been in the ground for more than a year or two, they get blisters and disintegrate. Looks like a nice day out, despite the smoke, and OMG - that toboggan run looks SO FUN!!!
HH,

O.K. everyone.

Wolf, you see a "D" and "God"; I'm getting old :P

Post whatever penny >:( ;)

Never pulled one that had those blisters :P

Thanks for the input.

have a good un...........

I agree. New penny. Those zinc babies won't be around 100 years from now for detectorists to find. They corrode so quickly... Now, as for the bubbling...if they do controlled forest burns there occasionally, then the penny may have been so shallow that the heat got to it. Zinc has a low, LOW melting point though, and the coin would have had to be just deep enough to get the zinc hot and bubble the copper coating on it, but not hot enough to melt it into a glob. If anything, the coin was lost brand new and the copper wash actually helped it hold together. Those are just my thoughts on that interesting find of yours.

Sherm...
Get yourself a penny with a "D" mintmark on it and put it in front of you so that the penny is almost usidedown with the "D" mintmark at 9-10 o'clock. This is how your penny in the pic is pictured. If you look towards the 4-5 o'clock, you can make out some of the words.

Wolf,

thanks. Think I got the O and D.

Saves me the appraisal charge ;D
Next time it will be a colonial copper
or even another hot dog bracelet;)

have a good un............

Wow, WolfmoonX is dead on it. I don't think I would have ever seen that without your "visualization". Good job.

BRRRRR...and I thought it was chilly here today, Sherm! :P
Love them pics! And that is an odd penny..never seen one with blisters either. ???

Nana :)

Very nice pics Sherm! Thanks for taking us along on your woods hunt! I think finding a penny in the woods is a sign of a good hunter, regardless of the date. I would be hunting the bottom of that toboggan run...looks like fun!

Sherm,
I think it was Daniel Boone (not sure) who said something like..."I've NEVER been lost in the woods' just a mite confused for 4 days!" hehehe
Great pics.
Cold here now, too...brrrrrrrrrr...actually saw snow... ( 4 letter word)... this morning :(
PRUNES!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Sherman, I love your pics with the story of "todays" hunt. The shell you refer to with "US 17" is probably a military issue, from 1917. The military used only the last 2 digits of the year. I am not an expert, but it could be 30-06 caliber. Compare it to one if you have one.

Nice thorough pics with great post. That slide sure does like it was tons of fun. I would be at one point someone really pulled the coinage out of that area.

Brrrr. I feel for you for stepping into that water. It was a bit nippy down here in KY so I am sure that cold foot was no fun at all.

It's really hard to say if someone has detected the woods a lot in the past. But I am sure the kids could not just play around that. They had to have went into the woods a bit and ran all over. Just don't know if the potential is the payoff.

Looks like you did get so see some great scenery today though. I hope all in all it was a pleasant walk in the woods. And not a cold miserable day.
