ARTIFACT RESTORATION. Please tell me what you think on this subject. All of the relics that I have are my own personal finds . I display them all for company to see. I used to pick up all the heartbreaker points and say "man why could'nt it have all been there". Anyone that artifact hunts knows this feeling very well. Since I display all of my pieces, I thought that I would like to have a case or two of my heartbreakers LOOKING like they could have. Artifact restoration can get very pricey so I thought I would give it a try myself. Do any of you do this also? Do you feel that it is O.K. or that it is wrong to do this? I am not out to fool anyone and the repairs are not permanant. I use molding clay and hobby paint . Far from a professional restoration , but thats not what I was after. I just want to be able to look at the display case and see what those heartbreakers were like at one time. Like I said I am not even close to a pro , just wanted them close. Saved myself a ton of money versus professional restoration. Well here are some pics of the stuff I have played around with. Tell me what you think and dont be afraid to bash me if you feel this is wrong to do. Thanks for hearing my ramble and hope you enjoy the pics.

af1733,

Thank You! It takes a little time ,but when the fields are all grown and theres no place to hunt I can still entertain myself doing this.

Nice work Bent-Twig.

I just sent off a Thebes that I found last week to Dr Gomer to have it restored by a professional. His work is unbelievable. It you want to see some of his work just Google "Dr Gomer" and you can check it out for yourself.

This Thebes is the first piece I've ever had restored and it was too nice of a point to leave damaged so that's why I'm having it fixed.

Re: Give me your honest opinions!

I like it. It certainly doesn't hurt the points because I imagine the modeling clay breaks away easily. It is nice to see what they could have been. All in all pretty cool stuff.,Unitas

I would agree, what you're doing there is very nice, fun, and educational. Matching the colors is the hardest part IMO but when it works out right it's NICE! You have some great frames there and it looks as though they have all had educated guesses inserted rather than just fanciful guesses. Keep up the GREAT work!

Re: Give me your honest opinions!

Sure! Looks fine to me. You're really salvaging the original intent of each item... and if you ever regret it, I imagine you can just knock off the clay parts pretty easily. It's not like you're defacing or disrespecting anything, or even devaluing things, since broken points are probably not worth a whole bundle of money anyway. Nice work!

Unitas,

You are correct, the molding clay will break right away and I use no cleaning on the point so it will go right back to original if I take it off.
