It's kind of like showing a picture of a white powder and then asking for guesses as to if it's cocaine or if it's powdered sugar. So, this guess of mine it at least half a blind test; however, it includes a caveat:

It looks like something from the pyrite family. Now, if you want to know what it is, and what it is not, get a small piece of the "gold" looking material and crush it between two rocks, or use a hammer and a flat piece of steel and crush it.

If it shatters--it's pyrite.
If it flattens out nicely and refuses to shatter--because it's a deep golden color--it's gold.

All the best,

Lanny

Thx r4real for calming our nerves. Lol. I figured it was gold. Can't wait to actually find my first detector wise. Been years since I even panned a couple flakes. Hopefully in a couple weeks I can hit my old spot.

So we guessed A because you had the weight wrong so we were all still right because there was no way a nugget that sized weighed 84 grams... lol, 180grams was pretty darn close it just has less gold contact then expected. So what did we win again? I thought it was gold you'd be sending to us all right men!!!

How was it determined that there was 160 grams of gold(I am assuming that you are referring to the weight of the gold in your specimen and not the overall weight of the entire rock because if your dimensions are right then 160 grams would still be too light even for the quartz in it)? I ask because I have an issue where I have some small gold nuggets that are actually gold clad bits of rock with an unknown amount of rock content inside each little nugget. Some of the nuggets/flakes are solid gold and some aren't. I really don't want to destroy it by smelting it or using aqua regia because the person who owns it wants it in its natural state, so I am looking for a way to calculate the amount of gold in the sample.
