Once again, I had a few minutes of daylight left after work, so I wanted to check out a spot I have known about for years, but never detected.

I had another OMG find. I thought I found an early copper, which turned out to be a badly decomposed clad Kennedy...My first dollar coin was last week's IKE, and my first Half came today. Isn't it weird how that happens?

Anyway I found this small cuff button on the way back to my car. It appears to be 18th century, or early 19th century at the latest. The front is badly corroded, so I have to assume it is a flat civilian button. The reverse is corroded, but I can make out some of the remaining letters. It is possibly "...OVILL.." or "...OVILT..." or possibly an"M" instead of the "V". Any button experts wanna take a crack?

I am going to do some research on the area tonight and will try to get back there tomorrow.

Apparently they are still in business! www.scovill.com

"Scovill was founded in 1802 in Waterbury, CT, when the United States was only 26 years old. The company has survived through peace and war, depression and prosperity. Now on the verge of our third century in business, Scovill is one of the world's largest manufacturers of apparel and light industrial fasteners"
