Went treasure hunting this last weekend - in a few different ways. I thought I had treasure, but it looks like I have some learning lessons instead.
Garage sale 1 - Found a Mickey Mantle card, on sale for only a buck. My alarm bells in my head were ringing "If it's only a buck, it can't be real." But it's only a $1.00 bet... I bit. Realized it was a 'Cooperstown Classic' series card, copy wright 1997. D'oh. Lesson learned.
Garage sale 2 - Found a 'silver' spoon in another sale. No 'Sterling' anywhere on it, but the words 'International Silver Company' are on the back. Hmmm - it's worth a $1.00 bet too. I bought it, and then took it to a gold store, and as I suspected - no silver. The gold company rep advised me to look for 'International STERLING Corporation', not 'International Silver Company'. Another lesson, another dollar.
Then just walking in a parking lot I see two ear rings. I pick them up, they appear to be diamond ear rings! Hmmm. "Well, I thought - at least I didn't buy them for a dollar..." I have to take them to get checked, but what are the odds that if someone had real diamond ear rings they would lose BOTH of them in the same place?
Well at least I broke the $20 mark (lifetime in finds) in clad with my Ace 250 at the park.
