I found this SLQ on a hunt after work with my pal EastCoastHunter21. This was Charlie's spot so thanks again buddy.

What's funny is the value jumps greatly when the goodies are visible and not worn away

That's in my opinion one of the most beautiful coins there is. Love the SLQs. Unfortunatly I had to buy mine just to have one to look at in the collection. One will land under the coil one of these days. Good find and congrats.

Filler coins are good for holding the spot until you find one. One is coming soon

Now how did you get that one so sharply clean? awesome early S.L.Q.

The old science lab technique with aluminum foil and baking soda. It's easy to f up a coin with that technique so be careful. I practiced on many, many, newer silver coin before I "graduated" myself to more valuable silvers.

Great find on the Type 1 SLQ. I'd like to hear more about the aluminum foil/baking soda technique. I'm sure others would also.

I'm sure there are many variations but here it is:

Supplies:
Baking soda
Heavy duty aluminum foil
Dash of salt
2 cups water
Q-tips


I combine water, 1 tbsp baking soda, and salt in a stainless steel pot. I. Bring to boil.

Loosely wrap coin in foil WITH SHINY SIDE AGAINST THE COIN with minimum layers. You want the foil close enough so you start seeing coin features while still allowing the liquid to contact the coin, so don't wrap it too tight. Throw that sucker in the pot. Check after 5 minutes by unwrapping coin and gently brushing with a q-tip wetted with solution in pot. Remove any loosened black ****. If nothing comes loose add another tsp of baking soda to solution in pot. Repeat with new foil.

Use minimum heat for a boil to avoid tarnishing from heat.

Use good aluminum foil - cheap stuff can stain

Always start with minimum amounts of baking soda and build from there. If any black is coming off, you already have enough baking soda in the solution.

This takes time. Usually 6-10 Dips and sometimes more.

Be patient and don't rub hard with the q-tip. That'll polish the coin.


Practice on some modern silver coins first before attempting on old/valuable coins.

Scrappy,those 1917 S.L.Q. are awesome .now for my information of your post of twins .is the one on the left type 2 and the one on the right type 1 with the exposed breast.It will be almost impossible to beat a pair like those.

I had a buddy who also detected and we both had Whites Coinmaster machines. He was over one day and we were swinging in my yard and he nails a SLQ in an area I had covered many times. That was the closest I came to finding one of those. (I was kicking myself for not finding it first too)
