Plans got cancelled for sunday hunt because of storms. Well didnt rain in morn so I thought I wanted to get out, soon as i got into my truck started raining. Well drove to a wood site about 5 minutes down road. Got out of truck and walked about 3 min into woods started to rain as soon as i got a good deep reading. Well dug about foot down and i missed it was on bottem and on side of hole. Fell out into bottem of hole grabbed it and filled hole in. As im running back to truck I seen 97 great date. As I am running trru sticker bushes and all bloody and soaked made it to the truck. Put it in a baggie and left didnt stop raining till this am. Got home and ran water to get dirt off, and well this is what I found. 1797 Rare variety large cent in au condition I think . Told it might b a S 125 any ideas. HH Mark It is The rare S-125 r5 This is the best known condition in this variety out there.

Congrats on a well deserved banner! It is great that 3 of the group have been up there in recent weeks! When you consider just how many people are swinging, that is a high percentage. I am honored to be up there on the top with both you and Jason.

Make sure you bring that beauty to share at the SJMDC meeting this Thursday!

An absolutely stellar coin. To me, the ground patination adds beauty and character. It also eliminates any question of authenticity. Personally, I would rather have that coin in my collection than one which had not been in the ground - even at the expense of alleged monetary value.

It is amazing that the coin has withstood so many generations in the ground. I found a 1798 large cent last spring on a field in southeastern Pennsylvania (not detecting, but looking for arrowheads), but two centuries in farm soil had left it pretty beat. I barely could identify the type and the date.

One of the most impressive Banner finds I have seen on TNet.

Re: 3 Minutes THAT PRODUCED RARE VARIETY 1797 LARGE CENT AU CONDITION

I guess what I've been doing wrong is spending all day hunting. :icon_scratch: It seems the key is to just run out there with a limited hunt time, dig up a stellar LC or half dime and split. :laughing9: WOW!! That is a beautiful coin. I'll bet the person who lost it knew the person that lost the 1/2 dime. I always think about crazy stuff like that, but it's cool to speculate about how and when things were lost. The how part, I don't know, but the when part was 1797. Amazing, truly amazing.

Congratulations!! :headbang:
