L Frank Hudson wrote several books on buried pirate treasure in Florida, and was convinced he knew where the buried treasure of Jose Gaspar, a fictional pirate created by a Tampa Tribune society writer for the purpose of creating a Tampa version of Marti Gras, was the reason behind this wanton destruction of real Florida archaeological treasures.
The origin of several tales of buried pirate treasure in Florida are from his books. Hudson also searched for pyramids and skunk apes in the Everglades.

Gaspar was a real person... lol...

We have been down this road before...

This one I can prove :P

Long Island has a rich history of pirates and buried treasure. The most famous being Captain Kidd burying his treasure on Gardiners Island. There is a "legend" of a ship arriving into the great South Bay of Long Island. The tale states that a ruff looking man accompanied by a Chinese and African man arrived on shore and visited a local tavern. They appropriated the help of a local with a dingy that could row them out to a beach (fire island) some time that night. Once on the island they quickly rammed 3-4 iron spikes into the ground and started looking at the stars. Once content they rowed back to shore and told the the local he would need him in the morning to go back. The following morning they arrived back at the site and started taking measurements. Meanwhile word had gotten out and people where watching them by the sand berms out of sight. Suddenly one of the pirates iron stakes hits something with a thunk. The captain turns to the sand berms with a flintlock in each hand and shoots into the hills. The people scatter. Once all the loot was back on the mainland the poor local thought he was done for. As the captains saddles his horse he turns to the local and throws a handful of pieces of eight at him. Pirates where not dumb drunkards as most think.

I lied on post 32..... I'm not that smart!!!!!

Sorry ARRC... warped sense of humor today! But I think there were some "Duck River Pirates" at some time...?

Seriously... When a pirate ship was successful common sense (YES COMMON SENSE) says there were a LOT of folks involved (pirates). Everybody wants there "cut". The only thing to divide was actual cash money at the time. Other goods had to be sold and then divided up. I believe even pirates then were NOT stupid at all and actually very smart. While buried loot has been found I'm of the belief it was/is very rare. Only when causalities were high and the ship could NOT be defended and the ship was close to shore was it buried. Other than that (I believe) only extreme circumstances would dictate that an ill gotten treasure would be buried. Loyalty only goes so deep. This wasn't Batman and Robin working together.

Not "speculation" ... Fact.

I have printed documentation Dated 100 years prior to this.

heh :P

He DID exist...

Story is "off" and locations are wrong...

But assure you... without a doubt. He existed.

If you stated that something is "fact", you need to backup that statement with solid documenting evidence, not innuendo, as you are apt to do. Without supporting evidence, you are only stating lore.

Heh...:P

What would you say if what I say is true ?
What would your response be if I do prove this to you ?

What would you do next ?
Would you spread this information ?
Would you re-think what you know about pirates and historical documentation concerning them ?

Would you seek his fortune with the information ?

What
Would
You
do
?

If you really knew... ?

The assistant curator of education at MEL FISHERS MARITIE MUSEUM in Key West, Cori Convertito, holds the same opinion-"Pirates took their loot to notorious pirate hang outs in Port Royal and Torguga .Pirates did not bury their money. They blew it as soon they could on women and booze".
FYI, ARRC
Dr Cori Convertito holds PHD from the University of Exeter, was awarded the Boydell & Brewer Prize for her thesis on maritime history(2011-2012), and is currently the Curator at the Key West Art & Historic Society, and adjunct instructor at Florida Keys Community College.

Then why do you continue to post, proving yours? :laughing9:
So far your claim to knowledge was made on another thread you started, where you stated Mel Fisher hired you at age 16.
I wasn't aware Fisher handed out PHD's on the History and Psychology of Piracy. :BangHead:

You know what the funniest part about this "debate" is ?

Its based on NOTHING...
NO historical data... No factual data...
Not even so much as a pirates "diary" can be used in this debate.

No one kept records... except on land.
And railroads etc,
Accounts are acoounts...

LIKE LORE... your "historians" are ALSO just quoting what someone wrote... LORE... A STORY.

Period.

They know nothing more than the rest who have read the same thing they have.

Period.

They were not there...
But ... human habit is human habit... now... as it was then.

Not all buried all the time... but some did ... some of the time.

Gaspar existed... because I have SEEN... what thy have not.
And what is REALLY FUNNY...
I mean almost to the point of ? I mean sheesh...

IT IS PUBLIC RECORD... Documented and available... and has been for WELL OVER 100 years...

YET these "historians" have OVERLOOKED this almost laughably OBVIOUS factual documentation...

If it were a dog... it would have bit em in the arse.

just paint a pic for you that are tuned in here...

People have been digging up crap here since the fifties...
HARD CORE then...

There were no laws...
No one around who cared.

And there was no money to be made here for many...

BUT EVEN KIDS were looking for treasure here... EVERYWHERE they thought they could find it...

The reason we never hear about finding any is because MOST is LONG gone...
By the 70's most if not close to all... is gone.

The rest... that remain... are too deep to be detected by detectors.
They are under some hotel...
Wherever...
But they are there.
The handful that remain... IMO...

Here are two boys with military detectors in 1950... YES 1950's...
RURAL FLORIDA... PORKYS VILLE...rural...
This was "common" and everywhere here....
YEP
In the 50's...
Do your historians remember this part ?

Groups ... MASSIVE groups...
With NOTHING ELSE to do with free time...

Gathered together and feverishly looked for "more"...
heh

1950's again... this cache was in St. Petersburg...
At first it was said that a huge amount of gold was found...
Even the cops got some...

When asked by others later...
The whole town "clammed up"...

HEH.
