I am stumped on what this could be... My father brought it home for my daughter from work in Alberta, Canada.. It is magnetic on one side (The side that looks like regular rock). very shiny almost looks like fossilized wood. But one side looks like rock, one side has metallic looking black speckles. Everything is different! Would very much appreciate any information on what this could be!

Welcome to Tnet

Good find. It looks like 'tiger eye'. It's a quartz-mineral semi-precious gemstone that frequently occurs with or contains inclusions of iron minerals such as magnetite.

Extremely hard and dense. A difficult material for inexperienced lapidaries due to this. Before arthritis, I loved working with tiger eye. Absolutely beautiful finished material.

Time for more coffee.
