I was in a deep woods in Massachusetts metal detecting and dug circular brass plate with what looks like a bird (stork?) on one side. A friend thought it may be a Civil War breast plate from a militia that may have incorporated a stork. The circular plate is quite heavy. Any thoughts?

Well it looks like a large overcoat button in the pic between your fingers, so I'm thinking a Louisiana 1 piece button - Confederate Local blank back. Louisiana's state symbol is a Pelican feeding her young in the nest. If bigger than it appears, it could be a La hat plate.

Thanks for the ideas. It cannot be a button as it is much to big and heavy. My friend currently thinks that it is a civil war unofficial Louisiana breast plate. However, my research has never documented any such item.
