Hello Tnet, I started this spot last Sunday and got the 1863 IH and the fat old ring... well, got out there again today for an hour before it got dark.. I wasn't planning on hunting until tomorrow but my flight made it in on time around 2, got home and hit the road by 3 and after the 45 minute drive made it to the site with a peck of daylight left :laughing7: I stepped out of the car, dug a piece of can slaw and my next target roughly 3 minutes after arrival was this very early Navy button. I don't know what it is with this field but again, another beautiful find thats toast :crybaby2: .... My pard got an eagle button that has a bunch of the gold gilt left too.. I know the pictures aren't the best, but if you look at the middle right part of the button you can see the anchor and a broken outline of the eagle still remains. We'll be back out there tomorrow so hopefully something thats not toast turns up :hello2: HH Jeff

Thanks Nova... I'll be out there for at least 8 hours tomorrow, the first 3 hours have been kind thus far, maybe we can turn up a nice silver tomorrow

You are on the right track with your link you posted. Is there any backmark on the button?

unfortunately, I dont think so BB... this button is really the definition of being toasted... Its a shame but after some more dirt removal, this thing is pretty much gonzo, im just happy i caught it before it was really gone 10 years from now :headbang:

Unfortunately some buttons you just can't help. If you want, post a photo in some better, natural light--using the macro setting on the camera when you get a chance. I can't tell that much about it right now to even give you any cleaning advice. But I think you're dead on with the time frame of the button. Anchor in a shield (not an oval--oops...).

Great find.

Ya, I kinda figured this button's restoration would be a bit hopeless, and my cam isn't intended for pics... its one of those cheap Kodak handheld camcorders that recently came out... I plan on doing a lot more freshly dug videos, so my photos arent the best.. Thanks again for your time, hopefully I pop up something thats worth borrowing Anthony's camera :laughing7: HH and Happy holidays BB ... Jeff

I have every bit of faith in you two consistently finding the goods. It'd be cool to see some videos posted. I have thought about it, but I get so involved in hunting it's tough to try and think about filming.

Dont know if u saw these but these are my first 2 vids

Nice find. Man it's a shame it's so rough but at least you can say you dug one. Maybe the next one will be better.

Thanks vayank, yes I know what you mean... it stinks to dig up such a significant piece of early US history and see that it didnt weather the storm too well... This is my oldest military relic to date, Ive never dug any 1812 or rev war relics so this one means a lot to me, especially being a sailor myself.. I imagine one of my shipmates wore this very button nearly 200 yrs ago :headbang: Jeff

I hope you can dig some better ones from that spot. It's almost sickening sometimes, the way stuff comes out of the ground but there's not much you can do. In some places here many, many, many, many moons ago we would dig buttons that looked like they were dropped the day before. Dig a button in that same spot today and it crumbles in your hand. I dug 3 eagle buttons one day and two crumbled apart as soon as I got them out of the ground about a week later I dug a NY coat that did the same thing. :'(

Oh yes indeed those eagle buttons like to crumble.. At least four or five I've dug and watched them fall apart before my very eyes lol... Ill tell you though, my pard dug an eagle button today that had a ton of gold gilt on it, something i personally have never seen! congrats to him on yet another amazing find :boxing:

I've seen gilted eagles before but they are not real common. I don't know if they had a specific use or what I'd be interested to hear if anyone else knows anything about them.

I have a hunch that these are officer buttons. I have found officer-related relics in the sites where I have dug gilded eagles. Perhaps someone can confirm this?

I bet you are right BB... I looked a little bit online and it seems the buttons listed as officers buttons that were dug retained a lot of gilt, but I'm not sure... good question

Looks like it may have been in a fire, hence your toast comment being spot on :-\

hey jeff...
Im glad you got out to md when you got home yesterday.
I hope you find something really good today... if its a really great find
maybe you could trade it for a macbook pro! :icon_pirat: hahahaha!!!!
