how did you come across it? obviously something made you notice it. Does it have a different ping when dropped? I know I found one with a weird ping that is not a magicians coin(1973) ...normal copper edge too.

Stick it in the freezer for 15 mins and do the smash test? Would like to see what's up! :)

Buffboy....i weigh my rolls, and one was 223.8.....way low.....so i weighed each coin in that roll.

What is the smash test?

I have a 1971 that weighs in at 9.5g. Its not a magician's coin either, nor is it worn excessively. It is tarnished/corroded with a splotchy yellow coloring. I noticed it when "sound checking" a roll. It doesn't sound silver, but it sounds very different then a normal clad half. I never have figured out what it is/why its so underweight. :dontknow:

The only two things I can come up with is: 1. Its a half struck on some sort of foreign coin blank. 2. The blank itself is defective in some way.

the smash test (from what I gather) is a test to see if the coin is in fact a magicians coin. I know you said it isn't, but you just never know, it could be a really well made one. Once the metal gets brittle from the freezer after 15 minutes, smash it against something hard like a large rock, (make sure it's something you wouldn't mind damaging), and see if the coin pops in 2 with the magicians coin in the middle. (and if you don't mind damaging the coin if it turns out to be real).

OK, smash test it is. Going to do it right now,.....

it did not split....not a magicians coin. put a nice dent in the rim tho.....hmmmmm.

always worth a try, afterall, it is likely worth only 50 cents anyway!

I've seen this on the forum before and found numerous light halves like yours as well. They are light and clink funny too. From what I read it is an ERROR coin struck on a wrong planchet. The US Mint makes coins for other countries and sometimes makes mistakes. Start googlin' my friend!

maybe do the magnet test, just for kicks.

I had a "magicians coin" that I found a while back, one I had set aside without opening one night and just forgot about it, well the other night I found it, got to lookin at it, and I could tell it was a magicians coin (or so I thought) by the way it sounds when dropped on the counter. But it was different than the other 4 I have found so far. It was put together just right (in terms of the obverse being rotated 180 degrees from reverse), and the cut line was so extremely hard to see I kept going back and fourth on whether or not it even had one or not. So for some reason, I realized it was attracted to a magnet, which is weird, cause none of my other "magic coins" are. I have never had a hard time opening a magic coin but this one took my probably 30 minutes or more. I finally got it to pop, and it appears to be a magnet that looks and seems like part of the coin. No other coin inside, nothing that comes out. It is insane. I got paranoid for a minute, but then realized it probably wasnt a tracking device or anything crazy. (lol, this hobby has made me one of those "weirdos").

Anyways, just thought i would share, in case you had the same thing.

While this is true, it's more than likely struck on a planchet rolled from stock that was simply too thin. It probably doesn't have that much value, maybe $10?

Good point, it could be a thin planchet too, I didn't even think of that! I did see on here that someone found a half on a light planchet and it was struck on one designed for another country's coin. I went on google and found a few instances of that!
